The Ending

I am really surprised so many people think he drowned. I thought it was pretty clearly shown that he was in the dark for a while after the cop made the Cosco end collapse, then he found the other end where the sunlight was shining and took the tank off to swim up to the surface.

Plus, it's just not that kind of dark movie.

Basicly you didnt get it. Or didnt watch, mustve missed the part where he left his air tank behind to be able to crawl trough a narrow space and the following "hickup" and bubbles commin out of his mouth and an empty stare shortly after.

And um, sunlight? Mustve missed the part all this was takin place at night aswell.

WRONG!

He was kicking his feet AFTER he did the stare. He didn't move out of frame dead with no current. Nice try mister but you get NO POINTS!

And the other key about what happened was in the last things he said to his daughter. He said he realized that what he was doing wasn't for himself, but for her. That's why he left the gold in that thing.

Now, perhaps he drowned off camera and nobody swam up into the area he was at. But I doubt that. I think he made it, and then went back out of her life so she could live it without having to worry about or take care of him.

Ill have to watch again, been to long, your comments are to far fetched to be believable. But of course it fits the usual happy ending Hollywood idea ... totally illogical.

Wow... you got that ALL wrong. Pretty clear that he found a way out and ditched his SCUBA gear to surface. His body was never found, but you can bet he'll be figuring out a way to get back down there for the rest of the treasure one day.

As for the source of the light, agreed it was not sunshine, probably a street light over a storm drain. It's not really important.

that wasn't the sun, that was the rest of the treasure, that was shining because of his flashlight

You have to remember also that it specifically said in the end
that they had conducted a search of the hole he jumped into but
his body had not been found.

If he had drowned surely his body would have been found there?

Great point! At the very least, it is supposed to be ambiguous, with a ray of hope--not just a downer "he's dead" ending.

I just watched this film and, with a few exceptions re: the writing, I really liked it. My interpretation of the ending is that Douglas removed his air tank because in the presence of a light source, he had discovered a way out, and no longer required the air. And I think he had placed the part of the treasure which he discovered in the dishwasher which his daughter purchased. A fanciful, but fun film and I agree with other IMDB posters that Douglas was charming in it.

Agree with you completely!

At 1st viewing I thought it was the gold reflecting back, but then noticed he took off his tank, exhaled the air in his lungs and was kicking to a light source. The police said they found no body. I think he left the tank there so he could go back down the way he left to remove the rest of the gold. He had told his daughter it was all for you, which I took as the search for finding the gold. I would like to think a few years later he makes contact with his daughter when she buys back his bass and they end by buying back their house. I'm a sucker for a happy ending
