I WAS SHOCKED!!!!!!!!!!

To think I almost didn't rent this movie from NETFLIX !! I just knew it was going to one of those silly ha-ha-and-giggles movies, but what a surprise. Kudos to the director Curtis Hanson, and especially to Toni Collete, she was brilliant as Rose Feller. It does not surprise me that she was twice nominated for best actress. This movie was sooooo good.

I agree. I thought it was going to be one of those silly sister movies -- in fact I stopped watching about half way through for this reason. But I went back to it and was happy to see that it dug a little deeper.....

I was sceptical untill there was little else on telly, and I enjoyed it.

Wow. I was shocked at how bad this movie was. It was so disjointed, and felt that all of the ideas were forced together. I felt there was no concept of time passing or character development at all, and this frustrated me. The relationship between Simon and Rose seemed so unnatural and forced. I was very dissapointed in this movie.

I wouldn't call this a "drama". It was a dramatic comedy, IMO. But a hardcore drama, as in "Mystic River". nah .

reply

It felt very generic to me. Toni's performance wasn't good enough to save this poor film.

If you loved the movie you should grab the book. The movie was realy good at following the book's story line and themes, but as always bits get left out for running length. One of my favorite parts was taken out, that dealt with Maggie's tranformation and growing up once she left Rose but before she got to Florida.

and I totally agree... everyone did a great job in this film! :)

I know, acoker529! The "Princeton" part of the book was so wonderful. But I was pleasantly surprised by the movie anyway...usually they ruin books I love.

I watched this movie before and after one of my kids was diagnosed with dyslexia, and my perception of Maggie did a 180. Toni C. always does a great job, and this role was no different. All in all, an enjoyable watch.

To tell the truth I wasn't overly fussed for this film. It was coincidental because I'd gotten the book out of the library and just couldn't for the life of me get into it, so took it back before I'd finished it (which trust me, is not something I usually do) and then literally about 2 weeks later I heard about the film coming out. However I was a bit disappointed as I found it rather slow and it seemed really long. Having said that I am a fan of both Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz so for that I give it points hehe.

I really enjoyed this film too, it was much better than I expected. I only really watched it because I'm a big fan of Toni Collette and I loved her performance here, she really made the film for me. It's a very enjoyable sibling rivalry/female bonding film but I think it's funny, honest and intelligent enough to be enjoyed by men too.

reply

Same here. When I saw the trailer I thought it would be okay but nothing much, then because Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz are in it so I gave it a try, how wrong could I be? This has become one of my favourites.

reply

i felt the same. i thought it was gonna be one of those shallow stories that'll give you a few laughs and will help you pass the time. i was wrong. it's such a beautiful movie and i'm glad i watched it.

Just once actually, and for best supporting actress.

I read the feedback to this film in the media which all gave it rave reviews. After much humming and hawing I decided to buy it. I must admit that I was disappointed with the results. While I may have an open mind when it comes to films, books etc, I felt compelled to turn it off after half an hour. I may well give it a second chance in the future. In the meantime, I can't disguise how let-down I was by Toni Collette (not least after a seemingly flawless filmography - Muriel's Wedding, anyone?).

I love this movie. I had a good cry. I loved the relationship of the sisters. I am glad they got back together. I hope Maggie goes back to Florida and marries the doctor.

I really like this movie but the book is so much better. I guess that is usually always the case as books can go into so much more detail. if you like the movie definitely get the book you won't be disappointed. my one gripe with the movie was cameron diaz. I like her in comedy roles she just didn't fit as maggie for me. its not even that she did a bad job or bad acting but when I read the book she did not fit as maggie for me. toni c is fantastic as usual though. wonderful in everything she does

I've seen it at least twice.
