what kind of dog was it that toni colette returned to the kennel?...anyone know?

A pug mix...in the book it was a purebred pug, but the director of the movie wanted a shelter dog because he thought that it might encourage people to adopt a pet rather than get one from a breeder/puppy mill. There's a cute featurette about it on the DVD.

that dog was adorable
it seems like a beagle mix to me
it had the ears and colouring

chihuahua and pug mix? - chug
pekingese with pug? - pugenese
I am sure it is a mix of a pug it has the same stocky body,

that's my guess.
I want one for myself lol

I think it was a Puggle mix. A Puggle is a relatively new breed that is a mix of Pug and Beagle. It definitely had a Puggle snout and ears, and similar body.

Yes, the dog definitely looked like a puggle, with more pug features than beagle. Adorable!
