i am Mexican myself but i have been waiting for years for an accurate portrayal of El Salvadors war or other bloody civil wars in Guatemala and Nicaragua but a movie never comes out that faithfully depicts the horrors in Central America in the seventies and eighties. number one problem i had with this movies was:

The accent. Come on. If you're going to do research for a movie set in a different country, don't use actors that speak in a Mexican accent, i never heard the term "vos", used in El Salvador and most of Central America, instead of "tu" which is used in Mexico and throughout this movie.

I feel movies like this portray Mexicans as ignorant that they cant even use the right regional accent... imagine the outcry if El Salvador made a movie about the Mexican revolution using Salvadoran actors and using their native accent, how believable right?

Also like many on this board have stated, they don't show the barbarism of the guerrillas, there is never a good side in ANY war (not even Iraq) there are NO "good guys" both sides act shamefully.

As a Salvadoran myself. I enjoyed the movie. But like most (if not all)of the critics will agree, the lack of "caliche" and "voseo", typical of El Salvador represents a major flaw in the movie and prevents it from feeling genuine.

I still insist they should have hired a full blood, born and raised Salvadoran to review the script. :P
