Majid - SPOILER

I love seeing the mechanics of how film scenes are made.

How was the suicide of Majid filmed with blood gushing from an artery to the wall? That red streak then appears in theatre movie posters, without explanation (even though it could easily be caused by something symbolic).

From a medical aspect, would death that way be instantaneous, as appears in the film?

reply

Death would hardly be instantaneous from bleeding out. It would take a minute or more at the very least, all depending on which artery was cut and to what death. When bleeding out a person may begin thrashing about or convulsing or lay twitching all depending on so many different factors. And with a cut throat he may also start exhaling blood from the mouth ... none of these things are absolutely necessary to portray death in this method, but it is common.

But in a movie like this, low budget and all, a director probably won't go into such details. Too much work and cost and probably a bit too gruesome as well.

Did Majid die instantly? i could of sworn he was breathing heavy and gurgling.

I read this in a chola accent.

No one ever dies instantly. Instant death is mainly a fictional story telling element. Judicial executions are usually drawn out affairs, all talk of instant death notwithstanding. Maybe guillotining is an exception, perhaps.

But if professional executions always take time, minutes or longer, then a self inflicted death will probably be even more amateurish and more botched.

It's been a while since I saw the movie, but I believe Majid cut his own throat with a knife (?). I remember lots of blood in any case. Bleeding out always takes time, minutes even, though hopefully people loose consciousness beforehand. Death by blood loss is often accompanied by convulsions and shaking, though this isn't shown in the movie I believe.

In any case, death by blood loss always takes time, minutes at least. If you remember your Classical Antiquity then you should have images of enemies of the Roman Emperors being allowed to kill themselves to avoid confiscation of their estates. The traditional method was by cutting an artery while in a hot bath. The hot bath being to speed up the blood loss which would otherwise have taken much longer to result in death.

So, aside from guillotining or a direct explosion perhaps, instant death is rare. People take a while to die. That would have been the case with Majid too unfortunately.

reply

he doesn't die instantly.

You can hear that he's still breathing for a while. Later, when Georges says that Majid died instantly, he is actually lying, which is consistent with his character, who compulsively tries to make everything look better than it actually is.
