What's with the razor blade? - SPOILER ALERT Season 2!!!

I am currently rewatching S&A and there is one detail that really bugs me now:
Geoffrey chewing away on a razor blade.

It seems to me that this is supposed to be some kind of indicator for his current state of mind.
I only saw him chew the thing twice - during the meeting in S01E03 (Madness in the Great Ones) and then again in S02E02 (Fallow time) during the first reading of MacBeth, after Henry Breedlove kind of takes over the meeting. In both situations Geoffrey was not "mentally equipped" or there was something going on that he did not approve of.

So my best guess on this weird and potentially dangerous habit is that he uses the razor blade as a kind of "anchor" to reality. Maybe to him that is like pinching himself to make sure he's not dreaming, you know, "is this really happening?!"

Does that make any sense?

I think its just supposed to show when he's having major trouble with reality ie he rather chew on a razor blade than be where he is (an uncomfortable read through, etc.)
