Realism -- anime vs. manga??

I liked this show. I think part of it was that it didn't seem over-stylized, with characters basically looking and moving (and acting) fairly realistically, not the over the top, hi-distortion element you see in a lot of anime. My question, then: is it because this show didn't originate from manga? From what I've been able to find, at least, this was a stand-alone anime. So perhaps that's why it takes a more realistic approach, avoiding a lot of what I take to be manga conventions? Anyone more informed on this distinction able to elaborate? Also, any recommendations on more series like this that play more to realism? thanks.

The series is created by Ryousuke Takahashi who is known for his Real Robot genre series Votoms, Gasaraki, FLAG, and Dougram. All his famous works are realism based.

If you like Blue Gender check out his other works, especially Gasaraki and FLAG, FLAG probably being the best thing he has ever done. It is 12 episodes.

Armored Trooper Votoms is one of the great classics in Anime, it is going through a revival right now. It is sprawling, going on 80 episodes or so, over the past 30 years. You may also want to check out the original Gundam series and its sequels if you like robots/mecha, as well as the work of Satoshi Kon.

Lastly, note that anything before 1996 or so is extremely toned down compared to now, so keep an eye out for the 80s and early 90s classics.
