So how does it end??

I just saw what ended up being a pirated copy of Silmido because finding a Region 1 or Region 0 disc is a pain. And then ran into a snag....

***SPOILER WARNING***

The DVD was fine all the way up to the part where they committed mass suicide and blew up the bus. That's when the picture froze and I couldn't fast forward or play from that point. AURRRGH!

So what the *bleep* happened after that??

after the explosion......

some soldiers survived(some of their comrades used their own bodies as human shield, you may have seen the scene a few seconds before the BIG BANG!!)and someone(probably from K.C.I.A. ,but the movie didn't tell)started the investigation

after figuring out why the soldiers did that, however, due to political situation(as it has been told in the film, after they finished training, the relation between the north and south calmed down, therefore they are no longer needed),they decided to cover up everything, locked up the files and secretly executed the remaining soldiers.

i saw this movie in the theater, and i have to say that you only missed a few minutes.in the movie they didn't show the execution or investigation scenes.you can only see someone scribbling papers, typing reports and locked up files with subtitles explaining the aftermath.so if you are anticipating something more ,i guess you may be disappointed.

aside from the movie, however, the fact is a bit more complicated(and didn't been told in the movie, if my memory is correct),after explosion the surviving soldiers did ask the korean government's permission for sending them to vietnam and fought with american troops, in exchange they confessed having commited the hyjacking and killing south korean soldiers(they did this when trying to escaped from the island).the korean government agreed, and secretly executed them the day after their confession.

all in all,in my humble opinion, the movie tried to tell viewers about the shady things korean government(or any government under similar circumstances) have done under the name of national interest during that time.anyway hope this help.

P.S. i am a little curious, where are you from and how did you know this film??i am a taiwanese and the box office here ain't very good(in fact it's a bit miserble).so i want to know if it is the same in your country.

if you wanna know how it ended, why don't do your studies.. this really happended...duh...

reply

Wow, that was pretty patronizing...

But fly2l0ve, since you're so smart, you probably know that this movie is only a semi-accurate protrayal of what really happened, so doing "studies" won't tell you what happened in the movie, will it?

reply

you sure some of the soldiers made it? I seriously doubt anyone could've survived that blast.

According to the New York Times article “South Korean Movie Unlocks Door on a Once-Secret Past” by Norimitsu Onishi, of the 31 Silmido recruits that made up Unit 684, 7 died in training, 20 died during the uprising, and 4 that survived the uprising were executed after a military trial in 1972. Also, six guards survived the uprising.
