I wouldn't call it an US blockbuster type. It is very Korean I think. I don't know how you define "artistic" but this movie has nice camera works and sound. I can't really talk about the writing since this is based on true story though. All I know is this movie's not showing all the inhumane things as they really happened. I think this has more artistic quality than Taeguk ki.

There's only one female actor in this movie and you can't even see her clearly. But I still liked this movie.

Warning though. It'll make you very sad because you know this really happened.

The movie is very tragic and depressing. It's basically a whole "forced to kill your friend/comrade" type thing. It's also a bit symbolic and allegorical. I loved it

Is this movie "artistic"? Well, that's a pretty subjective question because something that is considered "art" for a group of people, could be considered "trash" by another group.

But the truth is that Silmido is not the kind of movie that you might call an "art-house film". I mean it's not a film like Kim Ki-Duk's "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring". Neither a film like Buñuel's "Los olvidados" or Kieslowski's "The Decalogue", etc. Just to name a few.
Silmido is closer to the big-budget war flicks released every year in USA. Of course its budget is tiny in comparison with US productions, albeit is better than 90% of them.
