Wasted 80 minutes of my life

and i want them back

The Roost, by far one of the worst movies I have ever seen in the entirety of my life! The movie was just plain crap and what the hell was the guy who posted a review on this movie thinking; here it is for those who haven't read it.

"I got to check this out at SXSW. In fact, I had driven back home to Houston for work, and had to drive BACK to Austin just to see it, and it was totally worth the drive. Seeing The Roost in a darkened theater full of moviegoers at midnight shows you what it was like back in the seventies when they had stuff like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the crowds went wild and screamed like they were on a roller-coaster. Films these days are all too often bogged down with gen-x brooding and posturing, but The Roost maintains this feeling in the air like you would all be laughing with the people in the film if it all wasn't just so damn scary. Every once in a while there's a killer jolt that scares everyone out of their minds, followed by bellowing laughter. But for the most part you're just glued to your chair and wanting to shield your head from those damn bats! If it hits the big screens, I'm taking all my friends to see the late show."

List of things wrong with film;
- lack of any decent gore
- lack of acting ability in all cast members
- lack of character development
- COMPLETE lack of scare factor
- lack of pretty much anything to make up for the above problems

If you think this is scary at all in any scene then you obviously don't watch enough horror films. The ONLY thing this movie had going for it was the somewhat amusing late-night horror show intro/outro sequences. Other than that this film offered nothing but a waste of time.

I'm all for new and upcoming film makers, but by god this guy needs to try harder next time.

What's the point in taking advice on anything from someone with metallica in their handle?

reply

No $hit , right! Where's your movie metallica1417? Nowhere ? NONE ? thats what I thought. At least Ti west is making movies, all your doing is posting negative comments from the safety of your outhouse.By the way,you can't have them back so suck it!

reply

Oh wow, flaming comments, I certainly got the cream of the literary crop here. Good to know that my choice of user name and whether I've made a film or not affects my ability to review someone elses film. Because if thats the case then following what you've said makes reviews from 99% of all TV/Magazine/Internet sources invalid...which is a terrible terrible shame. Roger Ebert might just be out of a job now...and hell we better start scrapping almost every review or comment about a film on this site if it's written by a person who hasn't made a film before.

I'm ashamed now...yep, gonna go sit in a corner and cut myself about this. Perhaps write a song or some bad poetry, maybe even a blog, you know, just to uh just to get my feelings out so that people can know how disillusioned, how sad I am on the inside that I am not allowed to post comments on a forum because of the aforementiond reasons.

/cry

reply

I didn't bother reading your entire reply. I stopped after the "cream of the literary crop" part. I'm sure you're real smart, so I probably wouldn't understand any of the big words you likely used. But I did notice that you said you might go cut yourself. Why, did you just realize that you have METALLICA in your name?

reply

No matter how hard you try, you can't always avoid people such as yourself "peacock-15", if that is your real name, who are incapable of raising anything remotely similar to a valid point or argument. So I'll just move on now, let you have your childish comments and what not. I bid you good day.

See you in Tokyo bitch!

reply

So a person has to be a film maker to comment on a film? IMDB has been taken over by juvenile delinquents. The Roost was pure crap. "at least he's making films"? What is that? My 6 year old has a camera. Doesn't make her a professional photographer.

reply

Thank God someone else has a brain they actually make good use of.

See you in Tokyo bitch!

reply

You know, I was done with this, but I've changed my mind. I enjoyed this film, and came onto a discussion board to hear from other people who enjoyed this film as well. I guess it isn't juvenile to come on and say "This movie is pure crap", etc., and as metallica did, quote someone who enjoyed the movie verbatim and make fun of them. Thats the only reason I said something. And I never said you have to make films in order to critique them. You didn't like it, fine. But be rational about it. Don't come on trolling and just flat out bashing a movie. I appreciate what Ti West did with the budget he had. Do I think it's the best film ever? No. But as someone who wants to make films someday and will have to work with a small budget, it's good to see people making the most of what little resources they have. For example, Session 9 is one of my favorite films (although it is a psychological thriller more than a horror film), and it was made for a pretty scant budget compared to Hollywood horror and I like that, its sort of inspiring. I think the best horror film to hit theaters in years was The Descent (I also love Neil Marshalls other film Dog Soldiers), but other than that, what options are there? The Wicker Man remake? The Cave? Venom? The Grudge films? There aren't many good options for horror movies anymore. So the best ones can tend to be smaller budget ones (like Feast, which I also loved). So, there, now you have my actual stance instead of me just making fun of your name. I never really make fun of people on these boards because I do think it's petty and juvenile. I just got pissed that you called out someone for liking it. If you don't, fine. But leave the people that do out of it.

reply

Oh, by the way metallica, to prove that I am a reasonable and rational person, I did see that you are a huge stephen king fan, as am I. What do you think about Darabont doing the Mist? I saw it confirmed yesterday. I love the story, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about the movie, even coming from him. Not that I have a negative attitude, just indifferent really.

reply

The Descent is a really good movie, I really enjoyed that, the claustrophobic feel and the gore it was all very well done and I really want to see Feast. Just with The Roost, I was very disappointed with it all especially after all the hype I'd heard, normally I don't let the hype get to me but there was a lot of it about this film and I don't think it lived up to any of it, just my opinion.

Anyways this Stephen King matter, I haven't heard anything on The Mist until just now, but Darabont was involved in Shawshank wasn't he? Both the movie and book are by far two of the best things I've read/seen and I think if Darabont is involved it will turn out really good. Personally I haven't read The Mist, but since a film is coming out I will get my hands on it so I can critique the film :P (Can't wait for Cell to come out as well.)

See you in Tokyo bitch!

reply

That's cool. Look, I didn't come on here with the intention of picking a fight. Like I said, I think it's childish and petty to talk trash to someone you'll never ever even meet via a keyboard. I was just pissed that day. I came across your post after I had just come to the realization that the only people who get on here anymore (and this doesn't include you, you just had a differing opinion than mine) are people who just want to say *beep* things and bash and hate on everything. I had actually just left the South Park board, which I still think is as good as it ever was. All that I saw were posts about how much it sucks, Matt and Trey sold out, and all kinds of ignorant garbage. No opinions as to why, just "This weeks episode sucked, This show is stupid now..." So now I pretty much give no merit to what people say on here anymore, which sucks because I used to like to check what people had to say about things. By the way, if you ever get a chance, watch Session 9. I don't know what kind of horror movies you are into, and like I said, it's more of a psychological thriller. Not much gore, but creepy as hell. Check it out if you haven't. I'd like to hear your opinion on it...

I'm going to miss the running comments of metallica and Peacock about the Roost. It looks like they have found a common interest "Steven King". Who would have thought...King the peace maker!!! Darabont involement means"it will turn out really good", says Metallica about the Mist. I bet neither knows that Steven King personally requested and had one of the lead actors' from the Roost to be in his 1998 remake of the Shining( which he personally produced ) as the surprise ending. King never liked the acting liberties that the original Jack Nickols production screne play took. In the 1998 mini series he followed the story line of his novel. That actor is co-starring in a soon to be released feature film called "7eventy-5ive". I saw the the preview and a lot more!!!!! Let me tell you it is obvious that the buget was bigger than Roost but the producers sure got their moneysworth from the same actor panned by Metallica and I can tell you it will redefine FEAR for both of you.
P.S. That actor is Wil Horneff

reply

Well Wil Horneff's acting abilities seem to have been non-existent in this film, despite what he has done in the past and will do in the future, and I am well aware of Stephen King's thoughts on the Kubrick desecration of his book as is anyone who is a fan of his works.

See you in Tokyo bitch!

reply

Come on now, it only lasted for like four posts...I just looked into 7eventy-5ive. To be honest, on the surface it kind of looks like a teen slasher movie, but from everything I've seen said about it, it sounds pretty f-ing good. So maybe the trailer just didn't do it justice. I will keep my eyes open for it to be released, and thanks for the little bit of trivia...

metallica are you so stupid that you dont get the fact that this was an amateur movie. Nobody besides Tom Noonan have been in anything (or at least anything of note) before. Of course the acting would be bad. I'm sure your acting ability is fantastic. This movie wasn't great but there are many many movies that are far far worse.

reply

This was so bad it gave me 'Ax 'Em' flashbacks. Watching a bunch of morons argue or just stand around doing nothing is not scary, let alone entertaining. You're better off watching that 'Vampire Bats' movie with Xena. It had more gore than this and it was a freakin' TV movie!

reply

Not bad, not great, somehwhere in the middle, but still needs to be checked out for great style on a low budget.

I guess someone can't say they hate a meal unless they themselves are master chefs right? You've never made a film either, so what gives you the right to defend this one?

Well said.

The girl had a cute butt, that's about all the postive feedback I can give for this movie.

reply

I am halfway through the movie, but because I'm so a.d.d., I can't sit through an entire movie the first time... I am thoroughly enjoying it, because it is reminiscent of the classic horror movies, such as Frankenstein, that didn't rely on the gore to make their movies scary. In addition, the various editing and cinematography techniques are done quite well; the mise-en-scene is perfect in this movie, with that touch of red every so often letting the viewers know something is going to happen. The movie is very well done for such a low budget; and the soft lighting and hard key lighting mesh well to give it that overall gloomy/80's vibe. Please don't bash me because I have an opinion other than yours, that is just plain retarded.

i just finished it and i must admit i enjoyed...enjoyed it much more then Cabin Fever (which it seems to get compared to a lot).

i think a lot of film students seem to dislike the lack of technical craft in this film but i could give a *beep* if the film isn't lighted the best or isn't edited professionally. the film had great mood, a great story and the actors were convincing enough for me to enjoy the film.

sure, its a b-movie...but it reveled in the b-moviedom. and i had a blast watching it.

reply

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Metallica Man! This film just had nothing new to offer, and didn't present what it had very well at all. The acting I thought was about it's only redeeming quality. Otherwise, same 'ol same 'ol. I see no flashes of a young Sam Raimi here, infact, it seemed to me to be directed by someone who is thoroughly exhausted with the genre----like, "is it over yet? Can I go home now"----wait a minute, that was me!! But I do think the director just basically gave up on this one. I mean, my God, as bad as "Bats" was, it's still an entertaining movie, and heads and tails above this piece of crap. How do they get a green light for a project like this? Are there that many rich people out there willing to fund anything that comes their way? It appears so. Whereas the time in "Evil Dead" flew by as I watched it, I kept looking at my watch during this movie, thinking, "Man, I haven't had a bowel movement today"---but this movie took care of it for me!! Thanks for the load of crap!

reply

I totally agree. I read a positive review, I believe on Cinematical. I put in on my blockbuster q. Unfortunately or fortunately for me, it took many months before it was sent to me. I have never and let me preface the next statement with I love horror movies even low budget,in my opinion there were no redeeming features to this movie. The acting was horrible and the plot all over the place. By 1/4 of the way through the movie, I was routing for the bats just to kill everyone and allow this movie to end.

reply

I just wasnt too fond of it. The music was annoying as hell. lol

reply

I couldn't agree more. The into and outro were somewhat amusing but everything else seemed like a poor quality student film. Considering they accompanied the American release with an actual student film, I get the impression the producers of this crap were very much aware of it themselves.

Anyway, "The Roost" must be one of the worse horror-flicks I've EVER seen (and I've seen quite a few).

reply

I am a big horror movie fan and I saw this movie on cable the other day. I honestly thought that if I came on this site to read reviews that they would only pan this film. Boy am I surprised! I was thinking to myself, "Is this the worst movie ever?". I understand that it is extremely low budget, but c'mon, I've seen some pretty good horror flix done on shoestring budgets (Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity), and they were infinitely scarier and this waste of time. Horrible pacing, terrible sound, and less than stellar acting are just a few of the reasons that this might be one of the worst horror films I have ever seen. Not even a "so bad it's funny" kinda horror movie. More like a "so bad it's bad" movie.

reply

Because all the great horror films of history were rife with gratuitous gore shots... not.
