question about actors doing their own stunts

the part where cassavettes is talking to Ari and strong arms him into not saying anything to the studio .I was just curious can film makers actually do that pressure their actors into doing something under the nose of the studio with out reporting it too them ? Isn't it wrong for pressuring and actor into doing something like that ?
