Book Version (on Charlie and Aaron)

Just watched the director's commentary and he said that it was an older man in the book and also that there were some implications that were not where they wanted to go with the movie. Does that mean that there were like some homosexual overtones or something? Can anybody answer this for me?

It's been awhile since I read the book, but as I remember he was an adult. I didn't sense a homosexual overtone to their relationship. I could be wrong, but it seemed to me that Aaron looked upon him as a kindly wise mentor.

There were no homosexual overtones, although upon meeting him Aaron thought that Chali might be trying to hit on him for a brief moment.
