I even like weird artsy movies but UGH, AWFUL!

I am an artist myself, I try to find the "deeper meaning" in most things but even this was portrayed so horribly, so boring, so unaesthetically pleasing (and I don't mean just the unpretty sex scenes), such horrible camera work, no linear plot that was clear, awful use of music, and just plain boring.

No suspense, the characters made no sense other than the hippie girl with dirty hair was a slut for NO REASON but to BE a slut, and Marcos was deranged and messed up in the head.

First of all, (*SPOILER ALERT*) even if you are going to kidnap a baby and ransom it (which they should have actually FILMED more about THIS it would have helped ALOT for the viewer), and it dies, WHY would you tell some whore whose father (a GENERAL even!) you WORK for? And when the pretty whore says "Gee, you should turn yourself in," WHY THE HELL would you be like "ok", *beep* her, and then stab HER?! it MAKES NO SENSE. (and why the hell did he piss himself? that was never explained....) why would you risk throwing away your family, your marriage AND your job just because some dumb daddy's girl slut told you to turn yourself in? it MAKES NO SENSE. this whole movie MAKES NO SENSE. nothing is explained.

if i admire ANYTHING about the creator of this movie, it's simply that he could make me feel such disgust at the 94 minutes I wasted watching this. He shouldn't quit his dayjob, this movie looks like some broke college student threw it together without having any education on what makes a good movie, how to please an audience, or even getting your point across WITHIN an artistic but articulate fashion.

This movie gets 2 thumbs down, 0 stars, and a -10. Don't waste your time.

I hated this movie on so many levels!

I too love artsy and slice-of-life- films, especially when they are foreign, I particularly love Latin artsy films and I even appreciate straight forward crazy movies (and they don't always have to make sense for me to enjoy them). However, this film was almost unbearable.

I watched this last night on Netflix and I wish I would have read the reviews here and on that website before I did so. I began to get annoyed in the first 10 minutes. I once lived in Mexico City and I enjoyed the scenic shots but—2 minutes on a single frame? Really? I am all for adding suspense and a little visual stimulation but the very long held shots and all the driving and focusing on things that seemed to have absolutely no reference to the story really got on my nerves. Next, I have issue with the fact that the plot which had to do with a baby being kidnapped was barely explained or explored. I didn't get any of the characters, the only redeeming quality I found was the loyalty and genuine affection that Marcos and his wife shared. I kept waiting for something that made sense to happen. As for the sex, it isn't that I found it so "shocking", I have seen worse, but I felt the graphic nature of the sex was just being put there to distract viewers from the fact that there is not much else going on in the film. It could have been a good one, what with the premise and all but I think it was a fail. I know that sometimes you have to watch a film twice to really get it, but I don't think I will bother. It was interesting to read some of the reviews of the people who enjoyed it, but, naa, I think I'll pass.

Ha Ha! The original poster needs to have everything spelled out for him to truly enjoy a film. What are you, 12?

The "I even like weird artsy movies" line made me laugh so hard I almost passed out. I can just picture this dumbass going to his local blockbuster and telling the clerk that he's really into "weird artsy films." Ha!

What is your definition of a weird artsy film?

I noticed you made no attempt to enlighten anyone. I guess you are just trolling. Contribute or shut up.

This film rivals the equally drab Japon, which was unfortunately one of my first forays into World Cinema and too bad about that! At least this one had a good looking naked actor - but its a sad pity it brought me down to find that as a redeeming factor.

The only observation I have made and call it an intentional signature of this director (apart from really fugly people explicit sex scenes) is that the characters in this and Japon don't seem to show any emotions on their face. Something like that Elton John video featuring Robert Downey Jr.

I absolutely loved this and all those claiming above liking artsy movies wouldn't know one if it hit it in your ass. Tarantino and Aronofsky arent arthouse! But if you love real cinema like Dreyer, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Godard, Antonioni, Ceylan, you'll probably love this...not for hollywood fanboys obviously, as seen in numerous posts above

"Cinema is the most beautiful fraud in the world."

agreed man, i wouldn't expect anyone to understand this besides actual film fanatics. the original poster needs to get out more and actually watch something where not all the blanks are filled in and not all the questions are answered. this film was haunting, thought-provoking, and real.. not all movies need a linear plot. battle in heaven represents real life, the cons of it, and what actual people go through. go ask drug users why they use drugs, or mass murders why they murder people. there's no answer to some things, you need to accept that.

--you're saying that anyone who disagrees with your opinion is a "hollywood fanboy" who doesn't know what art is even if literally smacks them. Boy, are you a preening twit. I happen to like "artsy" movies, and I've seen a lot of them, and I have seen movies by every director you cite...and this movie was a pompous, dull, empty piece of trash. Enlighten us with your apparently vast knowledge of <sniff> World Cinema, and defend this movie. Tell us why it's so great. I think it was one of the most excruciatingly dull films I've ever seen. It appears the director ODed on some Antonioni one weekend and decided, "Hey, I can do that!"

"I can do it in 4/4 if you prefer it with a disco beat."

Why does everything always have to be explained, and why do we, as an audience, always want to be pleased...
