Pedant's corner

I love watching Eggheads, but if there were ever a show to bring out my inner pedant it's this one. I'm beginning to wonder if I have a tendency towards OCD, because whenever the presenter asks, "Can they be beaten?" I always end up shouting, "Yes! And they have been, on many occasions!" (or words to that effect). The other phrase which is regularly trotted-out that gets my goat is when it is repeatedly stated that "money cannot buy the Eggheads' reputation". Now, I may be wrong about this, but I'm making the assumption that they are remunerated for appearing on the show. Correct? If that's the case, then, ipso facto, money is buying their reputation, as they're being paid to appear.

Well, in fairness their reputation is for 'getting questions right', rather than for 'being paid to turn up on quiz shows'. If they couldn't answer any questions they wouldn't have much of a reputation, regardless of how much money they were paid to show up. Money buys their presence, but it's getting the questions right that earns the reputation.

It's just a catch phrase, although on some of their dud runs it should have been "Who will beat you next."
