If you can, you should also read the manga. The anime is adapted from it, but there are still numerous changes made between the two that make reading it worthwhile. The story's really touching.

Sidenote: Also, it's so much better to watch the original Japanese series. The English dubbed DIC stuff is what I grew up watching, but they censor and edit a fair amount. I think the original version is a lot more touching (and sometimes a lot funnier/sillier).
