Plot sounds familiar

This plot sounds strikingly similar to the 1988 mystery D.O.A., which coincidentally, stars Dennis Quaid, while this one stars Randy. Has anyone else seen D.O.A. and agree? Or this this total B.S.?

reply

It's different, in D.O.A. Quaid was poisoned, and was trying to figure out who poisoned him before he died, this one's different.

The 1988 D.O.A. was a remake of the 1950 original. The only real similarity here, and it's a big one, is that the protagonist is trying to beat the clock to find his murderer. The circumstances are very different though. I'm a Hutton fan so I'm looking forward to this.

At least now that I'm in my 30's, I can hold my drink.

It sounds more like Minority Report, where the character of Tom Cruise was accused of a murder he was going to commit, and he had to do something about it before it actually happened.

In DOA it was a certaintly that he was gonna be dead by the end of it - the tag line for this mentions that he's trying to SAVE his own life.

Quite reminds me of thinks like early edition though. (And minority report). Still, it's not nessiserily the originality of the idea, but what people do with it. Let's face it, when Romeo and Juliet came out it was an old idea (lust look at the greekes, Esp Hero) - and waggledagger still managed to mess that up even more.

I'll wait till I've seen it.

I was dubious about this one too, I was looking for something else on, if there had been I probably woulda not watched it, but Randy Quaid and the Cube girls drew me in, it's not bad.

Who cares if the plot is familiar or re-done? And why is it 'total B.S.'? I don't remember the producers promising the most original screenplay in the world.

Just about every reality show on TV has already been done. Most of your favorite sitcoms have been done already too.

How about watching the mini-series soley for the fact that it sounds interesting? There's really nothing else on except re-runs on network TV, so what are you risking?

And Randy Quaid does a lot of good in this movie, especially since he had to put on a good amount of weight for the role. Timothy Hutton's certainly looking older though....geeze it seems just like yesterday that he was playing a 19-year-old in Turk 182 (well 20 years ago).

Perhaps my initial message in starting this thread has become lost. I didn't make the comparison between 5 Days and D.O.A. because I feel that no plots should ever be copied or in any way similar to previous plots. In fact, I'm fully aware of the fact that many movies, especially today, borrow heavily from past films not only in their plots but in their settings, camera work, cinematography etc. My only reason for bringing it up was that I found it mildy interesting and in reference to my other questions was curious if anyone else felt this way or (as to the "Or is this just B.S." part) if I was looking to hard for similarities. This reply is several days late, but I didn't expect so many replies and in fact lost track of this thread.
Thanks

Don't take it so hard, ndupre: it's almost impossible these days to find a book, movie, or whatever that borrows from NO outside sources. Plot lines, characters and themes will always draw comparison to other works, because that is the nature of the beast. I'm sure that the person/people who wrote the script/book borrowed elements, however subtle, from other sources, sources which inspired them. I personally have nothing against an idea being "refurbished" or "rehashed", or whatever word you want to use; as long as something is entertaining, that's all that matters, whether it be a truly original work or a blatant ripoff!

Hello everyone, my name is Nicholas Dupre aka ndupre. I'm an incredibly foolish little sissy-boy who should always remember to sign off whenever I'm using a public terminal. Hopefully, I'll do better in the future.

Oh yeah, I kick puppies and old people whenever nobody is watching

I AM a sissy-boy!! That's amazing!! I'm so glad it's out in the open now!! I've been struggling with it for soo long. And you know I didn't think anyone saw me kicking those puppies, but I guess was wrong. Oh well, who really needs puppies or old people anyway right? Thanks again!!

Sorry about that. The opportunity was just too good to waste. Glad to see you have a sense of humor about it.

Good luck on you midterms.
