Am I missing something?

Three of the four suspects in the briefcase didn't have motives to kill him before he found the briefcase. Neither did the detective. So what happened in the uncorrupted version of the timeline?

yes, you are missing the three motives.

No, he's not. The fact is at least two of the suspects would not have had any motive if the briefcase hadn't been sent back in the first place. People in these forums keep trying to explain this like it's meant to be rational, but in fact the writers blew it. When you analyse the plot, it makes no sense. They had a really intriguing premise, but after three episodes, they lost control of it and it all fell apart. Suddenly most of the characters converge on the bar, even though two of them shouldn't have had any way of knowing that the other four were heading there. There is an element of predestination throughout, but "fate" is so regularly tweaked or outright circumvented that it becomes a weak excuse to explain away a muddled finale. It could have (and should have) been done much better. Like someone said in a review here, it was the weakest Syfy mini ever; that's probably why it's rarely been rebroadcast.
