Try "Alonzo's Oil", about parents quest for a treatment for their son afflicted with a rare neurological disorder. Based on a true story.
"The Verdict", with Paul Newman as a down-and-out lawyer involved with a medical malpractice case. But this is as much a character study as a courtroom drama. But a very good film.
For something more on the fringe, the dark comedy "The Hospital", with George C. Scott, is a film to behold. Scott is simply terrific as the middle-aged, tired, overworked medical chief of a large urban hospital where incompetence, murder and even a Native American shaman brought in to help cure a patient in the middle of the night, provide insights into the limitations of the medical establishment. This is NOT an uplifting, positive view of American medicine.
It's interesting that good medical dramas have been done much more for television than for the big screen. Nothing on the big screen can touch "E.R.", for example. And TV medical dramas have a long history, from "Ben Casey" and "Dr.Kildare", to "Medical Center".
As a third year medical student, some other good movies would be: Patch Adams (1998) and Awakenings (1990) both with Robin Williams. Of course the best movie about medical students would be: Bad Medicine (1985) with Steve Guttenberg.
I know it's been a long time since the OP asked, but I just wanted to point out the movie "Miss Evers' Boys". Another awesome yet heart wrenching movie dealing with medical things in history.
In addition to the ones mentioned below, go for MASH (the Altman movie not the series). And there are plenty of books about doctors and students, 3 of my personal favorits: The dressing station - Jonathan Kaplan House of god - Samuel Shem The king of hearts - Wayne Miller
I'm surprised no one has mentioned House (the television series) yet, it's pretty dang good.
If you're thinking about going into mental health (or just have an interest in it) a little-known movie with Patrick Stewart called Safehouse is good for at least one watching. This one is more about Alzheimer's and centers around the patient, though. Very fictional and a little campy, but some good portrayals of the disease.
And of course the classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a must see.
One of my personal favorites is Cider House Rules. More of an OB/Gyn - abortion slant on this one.

The House of God was made into a movie also. It used to be difficult to find a copy in VHS but honestly, I haven't looked for it in years and don't know if it is available in DVD.
"Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye." 2001: A Space Odyssey reply share
Whenever I'm in the hospital or in the company of 'medical students' of any kind I ask them if they have ever seen the movie, "Hospital" with George C Scott.
