Jennifer Ehle?

Was I the only one that thought that Jennifer Ehle did a horrible job at Betsy? She didn't look, act or have anything to do with the role. She was the only one that I thought was truely misscassed. I have never heard of her. I pictured Betsy being so much prettier. When I read the book years ago I pictured someone totally different in the role. Just wanted to know what everyone else thought.

Jennifer Ehle is a distinguished actress noted among other roles as Elizabeth in A&E's Pride and Prejudice. Her understated performance in River King was not a star turn but sensitive and believable. By the way , your second sentence makes no sense---it's as poor as your judgment of actors.

I LOVED her in Pride and Prejudice; I thought she pulled of Elizabeth perfectly. She kind of reminded me of a pretty Meryl Streep. I agree with you, she is an excellent actress; I'm shocked she isn't in more movies.

The *only* reason I rented this film was because Jennifer Ehle was in it. She's a fine actress with beautiful, delicate facial features. Since you're unable to compare her work in this film to her acting in other films, your criticism is on shakey ground. I thought the film was scripted poorly and actors can only work with what they're given.

Rent "Possession" and forget about Paltrow and Eckert; watch Ehle and Northram together.

reply

My criticism was solely bassed on her perfomance in the River King.

reply

I never realized before how much she looks like Meryl Streep - particularly in this film.

<Jennifer Ehle> has always reminded me Meryl Streep and at times Julianne Moore. I think she is a accomplished actress and although I didn't read the book I agree I didn't like her acting in this movie, but then again I think for the most part the movie was weak. I rented this movie to see her in it in fact :)

If you would like to see her acting rent {Possession} or {Pride and Prejudice -BBC version}

And so it goes....

reply

Yeah, every time I saw her in this movie I thought of Meryl Streep. And Ed Burns looks like Ben Affleck...but on the cover of the DVD he looks like David Duchovny.

I too thought she was terrible in this movie and all of her scenes felt flat. She had absolutely no chemistry with Ed Burns and she sucked the life out of the scenes they had together. It felt as if she was somewhere else acting wise, I don't think she captured the tone of the character she was supposed to be playing correctly. It seemed to me that Ehle was playing the part of the love intrest in a romantic comedy while Burns was playing the lead in a drama, they just were not on the same page. It was quite disappointing to me especially because I enjoyed Ehle's portrayal of Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice so much. Overall, the script was poorly written I agree, but Ehle's acting was still quite bad nonetheless.

reply

Maybe .... but that was the power of her character ... she could do that to
ordinary people ... kind of what made it so hard for her to give up ... i
thought it worked well in the movie ... the resolution of that plot line
though was only in the last frame of he movie though.

And what was it about the red haired girl sloggin through the bayou at the
end ... that was weird ... she was weird.

Whenever I read the book, I picture Liv Tyler as a great actress to play Betsy. Ehle didn't suit me at all (she seemed to be smiling at the worst of times). But then again, the screenplay gave her the worst lines to say, so it's not just her fault.

reply

I thought she wasn't terrible, just very, very miscast. Betsy was supposed to be sort of boho and wore flip-flops and was supposed to stick out at the Haddan School.

Ehle's wardrobe/hair/personality was so bland and she looked exactly like everyone else at the Haddan School - her character was destroyed. And Ehle, though I like her as an actress, underplayed the role too much - she had no energy.

I like Ehle, but she was all wrong for the part. It should have gone to a younger, actress with more energy and personality.

A prettier Meryl Streep?
A younger Meg Tilly, rather.
