You might also like another murder mystery called The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve which was also made into a film. That way you can read the book and then watch the film just like with The RIver King or watch the film and then read the book. The Weight Of Water is a pretty decent film too. Both the book and the film relate two stories - one in the resent and one in the past. The present story is about a photographer hired to shoot some photos on a barren island that had once been the site of a small fishing settlement and then the scene of a horrific murder. The murders really happened. Shreve's take on who comitted them is highly controversial. I just think if you like The River King, you'd like The Weight of Water.
You might also want to rent an old movie called Portrait of Jenny which is a mysterious romance with elements of fantasy. it too was based on a famous short story. I really love them film adaptation and I think you will too.
