Biggest Problem

In my opinion this movie wasn't horrible. the biggest problem I had was that I thought was a story about new france! The title Nouvelle-France and the opening where it says "blah blah blah, this is new france and this is our story, blah blah" gives the impression that the story will be based around new france. Instead it just takes place in new france with some historical references that seem to be mostly detrimental to the love story and not to Canada.

The love story was ok, really sappy and somewhat unbearable sometimes, but not SO bad. But it shouldn't have been mixed with a the story of new france, it suffocated it. The two stories were just too overpowering to be mixed together like that and make it work.

Tim Roth and Jason Isaacs did an excellent job and that's the main reason why I wanted to see the film. I love Gerard, but I thought his performance lacked. It was very sad at the end, but I was so unsatisfied with the way the story of new france was just sort of alongside it that I couldn't commit to any of the characters in the way the story demanded.

I'm a Canadian born in the prairies, currently living in Montreal. We have amazing stories to tell, this wasn't one of them. Thumbs down.

Yikes, don't tell me this is yet another 'Titanic rip off' with the history of New France substituted for the sinking of the Titanic (or the Pearl Harbor attack)?

I'm planning to watch it tomorrow evening at the French film fest...

Well I guess it was. I saw it with my mom (who loved it - she loves these kind of sappy movies). Again my problem with it is it dared call itself New France like the Michael Bay movie dared call itself Pearl Harbor. Last of the Mohicans has more going for it than this... so sad. I'm terribly disappointed (I'm just glad it was a free screening!)

Well, my biggest problem was the awful lenght of the movie. Being shorter it would be marvellous love story.

Btw. I understand to all people who feel touched by historical inaccurancies but from my point of view I don´t care at all. If I want to know something about history of Quebec or another part of world I´d look for some documentary movie or book. But as a scene for a lovestory it´s perfect.

I found the lovestory rather touching actually and the little girl did a superb job. I agree though, the length was too much. I also didn't like how they ALWAYS made the music swell at the emotional climaxes.

I think it's sad though, there was so much about Wolfe's campaign that could have affected things. I was waiting for William Pitt (Roth) to say 'Lets let our savages (the Scottish Highlanders) fight their savages (Huron/Iroquois)', the brutal burning of towns around Quebec to starve the town and draw out the French army (this CERTAINLY should have been included in the film as it would directly affect the characters), Wolfe to quote his 'Elegy in a country church yard', the French speaking Scot in Fraser's Highlanders to answer the French sentry's (he could have been part of Xavier's militia) 'Qui Vivre', the 'volley that won Canada'. As it was the film could have been set in the Riel Rising or the Fenian Rising or the War of 1812 for all the reference it made to the campaign in Quebec.
