Impressive

I have seen "the missing gun" by Lu Chuan, and to be honest, i wasn't very impressed by his overly stylish and self-absorbed storytelling. but i have just seen Kekexili yesterday and i have to say i'm most impressed.

this film should stand out among the revoluntionaries of the dying Chinese cinema, with other outstanding films like "Blind Shaft" (Mang Jing), the vision in this film is so penetrating you can almost touch the sharpness and awareness of the director. the topic was revoking, the story beautifully structured and the emotions and the culture of the western China were heartfelt.

the only flaw that i can find in this film was the directors control of the actors, in some cases the performence could flow much smoothier...although in the bigger picture it seems very trivial but i guess its those little things that differentiate a great director from a master.

but all in all, good for Lu Chuan and this film, i was touched

To be fair to Lu Chuan, he only used two professional actors in this film (the reporter and the patrol leader), the rest were all local people. This would explain why some of the performances didn't flow so smoothly! But it did add to the documentary-type feel of the film I think.

The bloke who was in the quicksand was also a professional, so 3

Wrath of God, most definately. Save for the different environment of course.

It has a feel of primarily any film that tackles the tibeten/mongolian climate. Harsh, beautiful ethereal landscape.

Put up ARTANAJUAT Fast Runner, in the list too.

Just if anyone is looking the movie titles up
unusual names can sometimes be a challenge

and I believe that Wrath of God would be AGUIRRE: THE WRATH OF GOD
( or Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes )

I believe that Fast Runner should be ATANARJUAT

Just an FYI on two very interesting movies

I also thought on Werner Herzog's Aguirre: The Wrath of God when watchig this film.
Other movies that came to my mind were Cabeza de Vaca, The Wages of Fear, Himalaya, Viento negro, Dersu Uzala, even Fitzcarraldo, Cobra Verde, Grizzly Man or Rescue Dawn (the last 4 also directed by Herzog).
All great pictures, just like Kekexili.
