He was on death row for murder, but it never gives the details. Cash's background is very mysterious.
And yes, his family was killed by the Innocentz. Starkweather had him go up against the Wardogs to rescue his family, but wouldn't let them go because they were witnesses to his operation.

It never says what he did exactly, but in the US the only crimes eligible for the death penalty are first degree murder, and treason or sedition. Executing people for treason is very, very uncommon in modern times, and for sedition it's absolutely unheard of.
Basically, Cash didn't just get into a drunken brawl over a game of pool, and stab someone to death in the heat of the moment. His crime(s) would have had to of been cold blooded, and premeditated, which probably explains why he takes to Starkweather's game so easily, and never really complains about the stuff he's forced to do. Then again, he doesn't seem to be taking delight in the situation either, but neither did Jeffrey Dahmer; Dahmer claimed that killing people made him feel sick, and uneasy.
I heard years ago that he didnt actually do anything, but was framed and put on death row to be "killed" and brought back all for the purpose of the "game"
