How could Hammer not know?

How could Hammer not know that Andrea and Shy were dating? Seeing how they were in the same school and Shy's mother knew because Andrea's friend like to gossip.

shy wasn't even in school. he was 4 years older then andrea. and the answer as to why is that he didn't really care about andrea. he proved that right before he died.he said that he would rather see andrea as a whore, then see her with shy.

He does know. The flashback where you see the two of them kissing, Shy asks Andrea where her family is. She responds that her parents are further down the beach and Hammer is on the waverunner. The second time, they return to the flashback, you see a waverunner pass by when they are entwined in the water.

Shy was a little older than Andrea. Andrea was still legal underage. Hammer knew that Shy and Andrea was seeing one another. He just didn't like Shy. He was jealous of Shy because Hammer's father respected Shy for making his own way,and working.
