I think that although Hammer appeared to loathe Shy, he was deeply jealous of Shy. Shy was a great looking guy with a nice personality whom the ladies adored. And it was obvious that Shy was respectful of others. I think that all of these things contributed to Hammer's dislike of Shy. Pure jealousy.

The Hammer character bothered me the most because of extreme hatred towards Shy... it actually made no sense at all...he was actually the one who caused every single problem in the movie if you go back to the beginning and watch. Everyone's lives were ruined in this movie because of Hammer. His ridiculous overprotectiveness of his sister pushed her farther away from the family and turned her into a tramp and made Shy (otherwise, a pretty cool guy) into a recluse.

Yup, Shy is the guy his father wanted him to be, but ironically he didn't think Shy was good enough for his daughter. So, he based his real acceptance of a man based on his wealth.
Contrast that with the two foreigners who've made a lot of money by screwing over their friends.
