My favourite scene in the movie

The scene that stands most vivid in my mind is the look on Michael's face when his oldest daughter accuses Sarah and Jannik of *beep* with each other.
Most men who are told that their wife has been *beep* with his brother would become enraged/unhappy (that comes later for Michael), but the first reaction mirrored on his face is relief, almost happiness. He knows perfectly well that his family life has been in the gutters since his return from the war, but rather than accept the fact that it is his own drastic change which causes the dysfunctionality (doing so would mean facing the guilt and selfhatred he feels) he hopes to put the blame somewhere else (he has already questioned Jannik about whether he has had sex with Sarah). And now that his daughter has comfirmed his suspicion/hope (he thinks) his relief is enormous. I could almost hear him think: "It's not me there's something wrong with. It's not my fault things aren't working, it's their fault.". And he proceeds to amiably ask Jannik's girlfriend a question, seemingly ignoring his daughter's outburst. But of course later he has a near fatal confrontation with Sarah and Jannik, now that all his previous pent-up frustration has been given a 'justified' outlet.

What is your favourite scene from the movie?

I'd never thought of it that way, but it does make perfect sense. It's like now he can blame Sarah and Jannik and their "affair" for the problems he's been causing.

Anyway, I had a couple of favorite scenes. First, the one with Sarah and Jannik in the bar, because it was very funny, and then when they're in the car it's like the beginning of their friendship. It's them being there for each other, just missing Michael together. And I loved the whole thing with the guy with the big nose lol.
And second, the scene where Michael goes to see Ditte. The performance by Ulrich Thomsen in this scene is incredible. It's so sad when he can't find the courage to tell her the truth, and then you know he has a breakdown coming. It's just too much guilt to live with.

Overall, I thought this was a fantastic movie. The performances by Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas really made it for me. 9/10

hi!

My favourite scene is when Michael has to decide between killing the danish soldier or continuing alive. It was a strong and decisive moment in this story, the acting was really good!

I agree with you with the fact that the scene when Micheal kills the other prisoneer is strong, almost unbearable. Some scenes of this movie, however, disappointed me a little. For example, when the family learns that Micheal has died. No too much emotions here! What about when the family is waiting for Micheal in the airport? He seems to have been gone for two weeks to a trip in Cuba... Hey! He was dead! Well... I don't no if this is the way scandinavian people are... Just kidding.

My favourit scene in the movie is one of the last ones, when Ulrich Thomsen's Michael character has gone mad and starts beating up Jannik and shouts to the police "Then shoot me!" or something like that.. i watched it for the first time on a little screen in a tent in Holland, i was shaking...

very strong...

I think they're all from Denmark. I am too. (:
But I've heard, that there is gonna be an English version of the film, maybe with Matt Damon as Michael. Pretty cool :D

Hi elefanthalex,

there is something called "subtitles" which makes understanding for non-danish people rather easy - if they can read, that is.

My favorite scene was when Michael went to the house of the slain soldier to talk to his wife and child. The anguish and emotion in that scene was one of the most intense I have ever seen. This is a great movie! Superb acting and a movie full of stark and compelling scenes. Cinema at its absolute finest.

My favorite scene is when Michael starts going crazy in the kitchen. This scene is very emotional and Ulrich Thomsen did a very powerful performance.

Just a really cool shot I noticed is when he pulls his car up to the army base just before he almost tells the guy what happened. It's tracking along, then all of a sudden stops and a flock of birds fly overhead. I'm going to watch it again right now.

When the baby of the man he killed smiled at him, that just destroyed me.

I'd say mine was the scene where he asks his family to lie with him on the bed.

My favorite scene was the birthday party dinner scene with the whole family (and Jannik's brand-new girlfriend). It was so incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. Beautifully written and acted.

i agree with ( much to be grateful) about the scene with the slain soldiers. that was a killer. the last time they showed the baby i thought it even resembled that soldier.

reply

My favorite seen is when they all lie down in the bed. Michael is weighed down by the burden of his consciousness while the rest of the family has an aura of innocence to them, even asking to watch TV instead. The contrast is startling.
