Did the TV show Homeland rip this off?

Emmy award winning TV show Homeland has been widely acclaimed for its writing but viewers of this movie will find more than just a few similarities.

In Homeland, a marine has a loving wife and two kids and is sent to war. After going MIA he is presumed dead.

Meanwhile at home, his wife is dealing with the news of his death and trying to move on with her life. In a prison camp he is forced to beat a colleague to death (later revealed that his colleague lived) and after 8 years away he returns home. He has difficulty readjusting to family life and is suspicious about an affair his wife had while he was away.

Sound familiar? At least the writers of Homeland have used their imagination to come up with the idea that the marine has become a muslim while in captivity. Well done guys.....

I also wondered if the writers of Homeland had seen this film before they wrote it.

I'd love to watch the original. I wonder if it's available for streaming. Going to go look.
