Liked this one? Then try these danish movies...

Fx watch the drama "Arven" by director Per Fly. Great movie and some great acting. I actually thought it would be nominated for an oscar, but others (i.e. the Academy) thought differently...

And Don't miss the movie "Pusher" by director Nicolas Winding Refn. Great, realistic movie about underground drugdealing (well, I guess it's always underground dealing drugs...) in Copenhagen. Forget about the idyllic Little Mermaid and Tivoli Gardens...this movie is rough!!

But avoid movies by Lars von Trier. He's totally overrated, and the movies mostly too strange and quite boring. "Dogme 95" is out!!

On the funny side, try to get your dirty hands on fx "De Grønne Slagtere" (which has a theme (cannibalism) loosely similar to the french movie "Delicatessen".

Also try "I Kina Spiser de Hunde" (Translation: They eat dogs in China). A grotesque comedy about a heist (money transport) gone wrong, and a lot of other stuff. Funny, funny, Funny!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I just watched the movie and I thought it was amazing. Ulrich Thomsen blows me away time and time again.

Agreed, some great suggestions. I love Danish films, and have rarely ever seen a bad one. They know how to write a great script & get good actors to give good performances. I disagree on the subject of von Trier though, I think some of his films are the equal of other Danish ones.

Susanne Bier has to be one of my favourites. "Brothers" was absolutely superb. 5 stars out of 5.

"De Gronne Slagtere" mentioned above is titled in English "The Green Butchers". Very black comedy with two of the best Danish actors, Nikolaj Lie Kaas & Mads Mikkelsen.

Saw the "Pusher" trilogy at a recent Sydney Film Festival. While the second one lags a little, the third is a return to form & possibly the best of the three. One very gruesome scene though, be warned, towards the end.

Have never seen "Arven" or "I Kina Spiser de Hunde" but they've now been added to my must see list on the strength of your other recommendations.

What? I'm from Denmark as well and I'm glad we have Lars von Trier. H is the most original director to ever come out of Denmark, and almost all his movies are worth watching - several times.
I think Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark and Dogville are all fantastic movies. They totally have their own style, they're incredibly well-written and most of all they are unbelieveably original. All you non-Danes, you must see Lars von Trier's movies!

I agree with you that Arven and Pusher are great movies, but De Grønne Slagtere and In China They Eat Dogs are merely a waste of one's time.

More recommendations from a Dane:

Great dramas:
-Festen (Thomas Vinterberg)
-Mifunes sidste sang (Called 'Mifune' in English) (Søren Kragh-Jakobsen)
-Breaking the Waves (Trier)
-Dancer in the Dark (Trier)
-Dogville (Trier)
-Elsker dig for evigt (Susanne Bier)
-To verdner (very recent, about Jehovas Witnesses)

Great comedies:
-Den eneste ene ('The Only One' by Susanne Bier, the best comedy in the world, I can watch it over and over, Bier is the best!)
-I Kina spiser de hunde
-Blinkende lygter (Anders Thomas Jensen)
-Oh, Happy Day
-En kort, en lang

And if you like horror/thriller films watch 'Nattevagten'

was "Nattevagten" remade in an american version?

I am a summer soup , oh ..

reply

Yes - 'Nattevagten' was made as 'The Nightwatch' starring Ewan McGregor. However, the danish original is a lot better. Both were directed by danish director Ole Bornedal.

reply

The original is always better ..

I also recommend "After the Wedding" by the same director as this movie.

Avoid Trier? I'd suggest you avoid posting meaningless posts here

I exist.

Why? The poster is sending his opinion, nothing one should avoid, and you can agree or not with him. I don't believe that anybody would make his final opinion and decision what to think of Danish movies and which ones to watch just because of a single post - his, yours, mine, anybody's.

Personally, I like von Trier (though the best thing he's ever done - and that is again only one, my opion - was his work for television, Riget (Kingdom), but I can understand people who think otherwise. I also don't find him the best entrance do Danish cinema, but anyone who wants to explore it sooner or later must face his work.

If I was suggesting people what to watch in Italian or German cinema I would warn people not to watch Fellini or Fassbinder, though most likely at least half of people would react similar to your reaction here. But these are just personal opinions, not a censorship, art encyclopedia or festival jury.
