This movie is much darker than say... Saving Private Ryan.

The "noble" soldiers fighting bad guys in hollywood film compared to the harsh realities.

Although some scenes are unrealistic, but some of them are true and historical.

South Koreans killing other South Koreans and innocent families for "joining" the communist party.
South Koreans forcing prisoners to fight for death

Not only is darker, it's also a more balanced and unbiased approach to such a complex conflict like the korean war. Or any war for that matter.
As you have pointed out correctly, this movie is not about the good dudes fighting against "those evil scumbags" in the other side of the field, as most Hollywood films does.
In this film as in the real life, there are not heros nor villains. Only human beings that commits either heroic or brutal (or both) acts regardless in which side of the field they are. The characters of this movie are people consumed and/or dehumanized by the war. They didn't choose to fight and they don't fully understand why they are fighting against their former neighbors and friends. No, they are only average human beings who wants to return home safe and sound. Just like most soldiers in a war, except for mercenaries, warmongers and fanatics.

That's why IMO The Brotherhood of War it's a lot BETTER than Saving Private Ryan.

In truth, the North Koreans weren't exactly nice men themselves - plus I don't see how it should really give a proper view of them when the plot was focused on two brothers.

But it did show that the North was willing to force South Korean civilians into their ranks - and yet, the nutcases today still deny this.

Let the world change the punishment for sexual-related crimes to execution

Ha! I was going to say that! Your DVD case beat me to it.

That's because it's a war film but an anti-war film. Some people can't get it into their heads why certain cliche's and unrealistic aspects were put in... but the film isn't specifically about the Korean War. It was about how the Korean war tore apart siblings and brothers, and in metaphorical cases the North and South Korean nations were once brothers but now is separated. Ask any Korean War veteran from Korea who has waited for the peaceful reunification of Korea... but this war had many sacrifices and no conclusion/progress was made. In fact, it became worse as the North continues to abuse the regular people.

Saving Private Ryan was just Tom Hanks' one of his main projects about awareness of what happened in the war. Great movie, but different types of movie you can't compare. However, I like Tae Guk Gi better because there's no real bad or good guy. It's war. There's never bad or good guys. Saving Private Ryan, like any war movies from America, always depicts its soldiers as heroic and brave and courageous. Full Metal Jacket and very few actually portray their own side as negative. Yet movies like Act of Valor seem to forget that Sgt Bale who went ahead and killed 24 women and children. Some Americans are just too biased and take sides easily. Of course they'll rate this film bad and overly dramatic/unrealistic yet they love a war film that does the same exact thing or worse.
