I don't really get why...

It didn't seem to me it showed sympathy towards him.

Why did they make this movie before the trial was finished? That's why the movie ended the way it di because Scott hadn't been found guilty (not that we didn't already know). I think they makers of this movie should've delayed filming until they knew the result.
