What exactly was wrong with the movie?

For some reason a lot of people hate this movie. I'm trying to figure out why. I saw it at Cinequest and the whole place was laughing their asses off. Hell, my friend who was with me who didn't get most of the indie references thought it was funny as hell. Did someone acctually think there was a point to the movie? It was obviously a parody/sendup of indie flicks that was meant to make you laugh. I'd like to think the people who saw the movie that night weren't the only ones to get that. For some reason people think this was some sort of revenge thing that Chris Gore did. (maybe there is something there that i don't know about) Can someone explain this phenomenon to me?

their parodies and jokes were amazingly unfunny. I was very dissapointed because I was really looking forward to seeing this movie thinking it would be the first good parody movie that I would see but it turns it it was worse than all the others that I've seen.

I didn't find any of the jokes funny because they explained in detail every single joke, why it was a joke, and what it was referencing. Plus, the paradies weren't even funny. Dressing an actor to look like someone from an indy movie and having them exaggerate some scenes from the movie is not enough.

I tried watching, shut it off, turned it back on to give it a second chance, then turned it off again. It seemed to have potential, but it was trying too hard. Parody is supposed to be subtle, which is what worked for the Zuckers, and even the first "Scary Movie" (should've stopped after that one). I agree that referring to a movie, then exaggerating the scene isn't enough.

I didn't find anything really clever or subtle about this movie though. It's kinda like all these "____ Movies" like "Date Movie" and "Epic Movie", where they just take a bunch of popular scenes from genre movies and make fun of them. In the end, you get a convoluted mess.

"they explained in detail every single joke"

I think they've done the same thing in "not another (you fill in the blank here) movie" and the Scary Movie series. Make a rather obvious reference to a movie in the gag then they point it out.

I remember visiting the website for Not Another Teen Movie to see who they were parodying and all the characters were explaining themselves like "I'm a bitchy cheerleader. I'm a cross of Bring it On and She's All That."

Come on parody film makers, we can figure it out on our own. We're not that dumb.
Well, dumb enough to watch your movie all the way through.

But "Not Another Teen Movie" was Gone With The Wind compared to this incompetent shiit fest.

agreed, just using as a comparison

The problem was that it was just another half assed, not even really a film "parody". Just random pop culture and movies showing up and leaving and with no real story.

Bottom line, its NOT parody, at all. Its just referencing. Hot Fuzz or Shaun of The Dead, whether you find them funny or not, those are true parody. One actual story, one actual thing they are parodying, and various jokes to go along with that, from wherever they are in the story, with enough room to have occasional light references to other movies. The movie should stand alone even without the jokes, the movie still stands well. Thats parody, and the others you see, like this, are not...

ANSWER: Everything. Who makes fun of a movie like Pi and expects people to laugh? That movie was already a delightful parody of itself. This movie just plain blows, all premise and no substance.

I turned this movie off after only twenty minutes. It was the most unfunny movie I've watched in a looong time. And it's not because I didn't get the references. I love indie movies and have seen all the ones they referenced (at least until I shut it off).
It seemed like the makers of it came up with the idea to "scary-movie"tize the world of indie films, and then decided that was such a good concept that they didn't have to think about how they'd go about doing it.

I simply think you have to be a movie geek to get it plus you have to be okay with laughing at seeing the movies you love being ripped to shreds. I can openly admit they did a great job lampooning movies that have influenced me. I love including Pulp Fiction and Swingers (two of my absolute favorites). I saw this twice actually and laughed every time. It is very lowbrow humor and that's why it works. Lowbrow humor taking down "highbrow" movies. Some people don't get it, some simply don't like it. It happens. I had a blast with it.

Lowbrow humor and parodies are some of my favorite films, this was simply unfunny. My dog tried to commit suicide so I had to turn it off about an hour in. Before you say I don't get this type of humor I give props to:

Kenucky Fried Movie
Caveman
Airplane
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Scary Movie 3 (i know, but I liked it)
History of the World part 1
Blazing Saddles
