Yet another Oxford alumni penned mythological waffle

Tolkien, C S Lewis.

Oxford is known as not just 'the city of dreaming spires' but of lost causes.

Well I certainly lose my sense of cause in dipping myself in these universes.

Am I not looking hard enough or does Cambridge not concern itself so readily with invented mythology? The more 'science' associated place has many poets but isn't so Walter Mitty as to spend extraordinary amounts of time on hot air and allegory, the 'chosen one' setup that has partly inspired non-Oxford alumni too, eg J K Rowling.

Clearly Oxford provides our fantasy writers and Cambridge provides our traitors 

Unless this book had two or more authors, the word is “alumnus.” The word “alumni” is plural. Perhaps you should study English at Oxford.

I didn't read the books but the movie has very lazy writing--"Oh my Pan, Ragnar!" being an example of dialogue that throws vague European myths all in the same mish-mosh pot together. "Gyptists" "Norroway" all such lazy derivatives. I did like the look of the movie and Nicole Kidman looked beautiful, so there's that. I put it on par with the Narnia movies, a book series which I did read as I child but the movie(s) was just off.
