Big Disappointment..... 'Spoilers'

I was looking forward to this movie from the trailers I saw on TV.

Went to a matinee on a Sunday, and the theater was filled with 20 or so people.

I can honestly remember less than 5 times were I heard anyone of the 20 laugh during this show.

I probably found about 1 minute of this movie entertaining/and or funny.

I thought the character of "JAKER" was pretty good. I think it is true that in WI, a lot of people look back on their high school football years "Al Bundy" style.

in the movie Jaker was the "best high school player in NE Wisconsin" until he wrecked his knee at the age of 15.

Most of the scenes in the movie did not flow together at all. When two of the main characters are driving from CA to WI, there were several times where I thought "Why did they have that scene involved" like when they went to stay at their friends room in LV.

Some of the comments/jokes felt like they handed just anyone on the street a pen and paper and said "write a funny line".

One example was the classic "I have to drain my main vein".

I think I remember laughing at that one.....when I was 12 years old.

Overall it was a BIG, BIG disappointment.

I am glad I only paid matinee price, but still wasted 90 minutes of my life.

I honestly can not believe how it got a rating of 8 out of 10. Are you kidding?

I honestly believe it must be people associated with the movie who are trying to pump up the rating so the movie will get a wider distribution play.

This movie is destined to run on Comedy Central from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. on a Tuesday.

Anyone that rated this movie higher than a 5 is probably a plant. It's a so-so movie with its only appeal being Wisconsinites and Yoopers. Kind of like that horror movie with Ed Beagley Jr and Stokkard Channing that was filmed in Oshkosh a few years back -- the only people that ever saw it or even wanted to see it were people from Oshkosh.

I have lived in Wisconsin my entire life (30 years) and have visited the U.P. Even with all of that I still did not find any real appeal to the movie.
I am surprised it is still hovering at 7.9 and sadly the 80 or so of us who voted were probably the only (and unlucky ones) to see this film.
It was pulled from the theater in WI that I saw it at, and I wouldn't expect this to go much farther. Wouldn't even think they would blow $$ on makiing it into a DVD.

Well, if you were paying attention, that scene not only sets up the gangster who is going after Jake, but also provides another example of how Higgins is always screwing them over. It also points out how little cash they have that they're forced to crash with a guy they can't stand.

The joke there was that it's NOT a funny thing to say, yet this hack comic was saying it as if he was the wittiest guy on the planet. That's called character-driven comedy, meaning it's not all about "funny lines", but about characters doing and saying things that are funny in context.

the movie still SUCKED.

I guess my opinion (which is the majority since it did not go anywhere) so thanks for the try on "education"

I just got done watching it like 10 minutes ago. I'm from Green Bay and to be completely honest it was not only a half-cocked and lame movie, but I'm kind of offended by it. This wanna be filmmaker from Chicago comes up north to Wisconsin and paints us all as behind-the-times (macarena) rednecks who all go huntin' and drinkin' and love us our Packers. Maybe this all is true in the UP, but honsestly with the name "Green Bay" in the title, associations will be made. I understand that some of the humor is tounge-in-cheek, but some of this stuff reminds me of crap I did in high school. Including the "Macarena" six times throughout a movie is only funny to the people making said movie. To everyone else its just annoying, and to me, kind of insulting. I could imagine a person would get knocked out pretty quickly if they were caught doing the macarena in any bar I've ever been to around here- especially the farther North I go. I could go deeper into why this movie is terrible (sound distortion especially with loud noises or shouting, cheap camera angles, and poor dialogue that is somehow overshadowed by even less believable acting. Most people seem to love this movie because they're "in it" in some figurative way- not realizing they're being made fun of the entire time.

Also, did anyone else notice that the review on the main page could literally apply to any romantic comedy? I speculate it may not be 100% genuine if you know what I mean.

Ummm....he actually grew up in Marinette WI, where some of the shots were filmed.

I may be stupid than most people :) but I really, really liked this movie. Indeed it's a light-weight stand-up comedy movie, but really, it's a fresh and entertaining independent movie. You guys are way too harsh on independent movies.

You're right daemon, this was a funny movie. I live in Green Bay too, but unlike the other poster above- i wasn't offended for two reasons:

1. I was too busy laughing.

2. All those characters reminded me of my wife's family in one way or another (mullets, still dancing to songs that were popular 6 years ago<one hop now y'all>, mutilating the English language, swearing out of context, drinking beer with breakfast). I mean, for crying out loud, they still do the Chicken Dance at weddings here! The movie is set in Pine Lake, but they could have called it Luxemburg/Casco.

When I saw the premiere in Green Bay (which was VERY well attended) the audience loved it- even the flannel wearing, "Bears suck!" crowd. They saw themselves and laughed. Then the movie played for a week and did moderate to good business. I show the dvd to friends and teenagers that I work with and they laugh their butts off too.

Now quit bein' a pop jag or get the frick out of town.

No offense, but you validated the previous comment that the only people who found the movie funny are those with a direct connection to the local culture.

I personally rented the flick solely because Mark Borchardt had an acting role in it. After seeing "American Movie," it was amusing to see him in character. And that was the beginning and end of what I enjoyed about the movie. I chuckled maybe 3-4 times, mostly at Big Jake.

I could describe each problem I had with the flick, but it's not really worth it. I'd just say it was a cute attempt that didn't hit the mark.

Well, I'm a foreigner, Asia, & I'm watching this now & honestly, I find it dragging & boring so far. I haven't laughed yet, so I'm waiting....
