What the heck?

I live in Green Bay and I haven't heard a thing about this movie. Was it filmed here? What is it about? It's not just a Packers-UPer movie is it?

Can someone help me out?

I know someone who was in this film, it was mostly filmed in Marinette.
Nobody wanted to distribute this film, it most likely won't be available.

There was a premier of the movie last night in Marinette. Pete Schwaba said that they are still working on getting it released, but it will most likely start in Wisconsin and possibly Michigan and Minnesota fairly soon. He also anticipates that it will be available on DVD by this spring.

By the way...the movie was great! Not a 10, but definitely above an 8 and as a Yooper or upper Wisconsinite, you can't help but love it.

It's playing in Madison, so I guess it's playing somewhere besides festivals.

i also live in gb and work with a person who is a personal friend of Pete Schwaba (they grew up in Marinette Wi) my co-worker dan thyne actually had a minor role in the movie. i dont know anything about a release date but i do know that there is a showing in marinette and in madison or milwaukee this week sometime (today is oct 19 2005)

The film also played at the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison last spring to a full house.

The movie was filmed in Marinette from what I hear...that would be why Green Bay people haven't heard about it, GREEN BAY runs along the shore in Marinette..that's I would think is where the name comes from, they call the town Pine Lake..something to that effect... If anyone knows anything else about a release date, plot of the story, I would like to hear about it
Thanks,

I saw it last night at the Green Bay premiere and laughed my butt off. It's not a perfect movie but it's darn entertaining.

The story is about a stand up comedian going to do a series of shows in a northeastern Wisconsin, small town bar for Roctoberfest. The catch is that one of the Tonight Show bookers goes home there every year to enjoy the comedy.

While on the way there they accidently run down a small time gangster with their Geo, who follows them to Wisconsin on a job of his own: to kill the "Godfather of Green Bay," Tony Goldwyn with a Don Majkowski mullet and a penchant for the Macharena.

When the comedian gets to Wisconsin he hooks up with his old high school English teacher played by Lauren Holly. She happens to be the latest girlfriend of the Godfather. Obviously, hijinx ensue.

The way everything comes together in the end is contrived in the best posible sense.

We hung out with Shwaba afterwards and I found out he's just a regular dude with great ideas. GOGB is the first thing he ever directed and it's great. I hope he makes a hundred more movies around here. Check it out- you'll love it no matter what part of the country you're from.

And watch for another Wisconsin production called HUNT, a horror film by another local genius.

I shall owe thee an answer for that...

I have several friends that are in the film one is actually listed in the credits. It was filmed in the Marinette/Menominee area. I'm orginally from Marinette and I heard about it out here in Richmond, Virginia...the trailer is awesome!

reply

I saw it today (March 25, 2006) in Oshkosh. Its OK. Not the best movie I've seen but far from the worst. They talk more like Yoopers but I guess that's what others think we sound like!

reply

i saw it yesterday too and im from the marinette/menominee area. they make our accent wayyyyyyyy to thick. i mean we do not sound that bad. and not all of us are packer fans. but whatever it was an ok movie.

reply

I don't know. I grew up in Green Bay, but after a few years in the Air Force, I come home and just get overwhelmed by the accent. True, not everybody talks like that, but to an outsider's ear, it really is a very promintent accent. That's especially true in the very northern part of the state, where the film is apparently set (if they meant the real Pine Lake, then it's right on the border of the U.P.) The accent is thicker the further north you go, and that's especially true in the really small towns.

If you live there, you don't hear it. If you leave for a while, you *really* hear it.

Also From Green Bay. Just watched the film, I work at a local blockbuster and we only got one copy, but it comes out in two weeks. The Green Bay Press Gazette had a two page story in the weekend section all about the film. Bay Park was even showing it for a few weeks. Guess ya missed it.

My friend was in this movie and has been waiting for its dvd release. Glad to know it is here. Grew up in Marinette, went to UW Marinette at the time they filmed it. A lot of the people who were extras had some tie to the college.

The accent gets thicker the further north you get, especially the further you go towards the UP. There is a definite influence of "yooper" dialect in Marinette county. Accents are also influenced by our Canadian neighbors. I go to grad school in Texas and I get asked if I am from Canada. (aboot or aboat instead of about) As an anthropologist with an interest in descriptive linguistics I find the comments here fascinating. As for thick accents ... I tend to giggle when I hear it represented on film. When I go back home for holiday the thicker the accent seems to be expressed.

While every Wisconsinite is not a Packer fan think about the news when the top story the majority of the time is something about the Packers... Says a lot to outsiders.

Looking forward to the film!

I'm waaay late to the dance here, but finally saw the movie. What a jem! Marinette is my hometown and while the movie doesn't depict it dead-on accurate, it's pretty darn close and I like the characature. It was also cool to see some natives of Marinette/Menominee in the film (other than Pete Schwaba himself), like Tim Evans and Mike Desotell. Overall, it was a pretty hilarious movie and I thought all the acting was really solid - especially from Pete. He gave a down to earth yet hilarious performance, and did his fellow comic, played by Lance Barber. I hope Pete writes more movies in the future, because he most certainly has the goods!
