Am I the only one...?

Is it me or is this whole "poor black people" stuff getting a little old?

I don't want this to be a topic about race or racism, there are plenty of those. I want to know who else agrees with me. It seems that if this were a story about a bunch of white players triumphing over an all-black team, it wouldn't do as well. Is that likely? I'm just getting annoyed by all of these "feel good" stories that almost vilify white people while making the black people such heart breaking characters. Is that always necessary? I get the point, black people (unfortunately) had it tough in this country at one time. But do we have to keep being reminded?

This is a movie from the 1960s. It shows what our society was like at that time. It is important to learn history so that we don't repeat it (I know it's a cliche'). Some people still don't get it.

kentucky barely beat duke. bob verga , the best player in the country played with a fever of 100.5 and a bad case of the flu. tw got lucky playing against rupp's runts. vic bubbas had vacendak, marin, and many more. too bad duke didn't play. i wonder if racist title would have been applied to vic bubas and duke.

Always a DUKE fan to ruin it? Does Duke have 7 titles? Who has the most regular season wins ever? Oh that's right KENTUCKY! Who has the most final four appearances? Oh that's right KENTUCKY!!! Who has the most conference titles of any conference ever? Oh that's right KENTUCKY! Don't even bring up the Lattener/Final Four hail mary. Lattener was talented, but THAT shot was luck. Luck when it counted, but luck none the less.
And before you bring up the crap season we are having, who cares? It happens. Gotta be loyal!

This movie was more about simply a small college succeeding to win the National Championship by using players that weren't as common in the game. The heavy racism factor was put into the movie to make it more interesting, and make you feel happier that the unknown 'Texas Western' team (now UTEP) defied all odds to win. They messed with a lot of historical facts to make this, but hey, it's a Disney movie.

wanna bet? This was simply black overcoming white, simple as that, and yes I agree with the OP, movies like this are getting old. They are nothing but liberal, white guilt movies part of hollywood's agenda.

You are too stupid to be able know what guilt is.

To actually answer the TC's post, "yes".

No, I'm sure you're not alone, but...

Yes, we need to be reminded. For those of us that don't remember history, we are likely to make the same mistakes again. As has been previously stated, this movie touches us on many levels.

This is a fantastic movie, well acted and directed. I'm white and not a basketball fan and loved the story along with the movie. The comments at the end are really telling, especially by Pat Riely describing the Texas team as, "...the better team..."

And to the topic of this thread, I take it as racially stated, maybe not intended, but the tone was such. Our country has a history of racism we need not repeat the mistakes of times past.

My problem is, that sometimes it seems that the race issue is only played in order to tug at the emotions of viewers rather than for it's historical significance. To me, that get's in the way of good filmmaking. Not to say that this film does that or that it is a bad film. I just think that race is one of many things that are exploited only for meaningless shock value. There's no place for that in good filmmaking in my opinion.

Go watch "RUDY" then, poor white boy gets upset when he sees black men winning. Don't watch the NBA white boy, you might get upset

Have you not seen Hoosiers? I'm as pale as they come, and these "feel good" stories go both ways Tokyo. Hoosiers, which is pound for pound the best basketball, possibly sports movie of all time, has the white players triumphing over black players in the final game. And news flash...black people still have it tougher than a lot of white people in this country, by design that was put in place many years ago. Now, one thing I did not like hearing was that the movie threw in that "statement" in the end. It would have been just fine had they been true to the real story.

Next time you don't want a thread to be about race, then don't use "poor black people/race/racism/white/all-black/white people/black people/black people."

I just watched this last night for the first time. I am a DIE HARD BLEED BLUE UK fan. Although Rupp and his pitiful attitude toward African American players (or African Americans in general) was only displayed in the final scenes for the championship game, that to me, was the most poignant scene in the film. While there were too many hate scenes related to the segregationists that existed in the 60s (and still today) I know many people who were around for that game and for us (as educated UK fans who have some sense, even though we are known as the most passionate fans), it was poetic justice that an all African American team took down the team of a man who refused to recruit African Americans. The brief scenes where the UK students were watching and celebrated? THAT REALLY HAPPENED. This was well before my time, Coach Rupp died when I was like 3 or something, many stories abound. Yes, this is a story of overcoming not adversity, but hate. Even if it's at the hands of my beloved Wildcats. I can admit when we were stupid.

That's a lie. Adolph Rupp recruited and offered scholarships to multiple black players before this game was played. Don't learn your "history" from movies.
