i very much enjoyed this short film.

it seems that the creators did nothing else like this.

might anyone have any film-recommendations for those who enjoyed the surreality this movie delivered?

reply

If you were looking for similar film recommendations, scroll down to the "recommendations" (sorry if I spelled it wrong) tab that's below the message board tab on the main Cat Soup page of IMDB.

thank you. :)

look up the works by hideaki anno (Evangelion) and to some extent Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress) and extremely much so Mamoru Oshii's Angels Egg, the only movie that I have sean that comes close in dystopian wierdness...

I found Cat Soup while browsing around on youtube and found Blame! (doesn't exist in imdb though:S) and animdb recomended cat soup, so try out Blame! if you can find it....

i would strongly advise "Mind Game" by Masaaki Yuasa : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452039/

that looks great!
not on netflix and the dvd is expensive, yar!

Well, there's a series of television shorts that have been fansubbed. However, the movie is more a creative exercise while the shorts were ripped straight from the original manga. The manga was written by a woman who eventually committed suicide and is more disturbing than the film. I'm also trying to find the original manga.

As for the shorts, try googling Nekojiru Gekijou.

reply

ooh, neat!
now i guess I'll have to figure out how torrents work. :)

reply

Just go to Youtube, and search for "Nekojiru Gekijou".
It has most of the episodes.

I'm actually watching it as I type this.
It's like Japanese South Park.

I found something.
'Visions of Frank.'
8 short animations from Japan based on the surrealist comic book 'Frank' by Jim Woodring.

i rented it from Netflix.
i think if you like Cat Soup, you will also enjoy Frank. The comic is great too.

I saw a very very very weird short anime a few years ago and I'm going crazy trying to figure out what it's called. It was extremely surreal and involved a boy and a girl who were riding around on levitating skateboard type things and then the boy got sucked into this "thing" that I can't really describe and then he was turned into a fish. I don't remember what else happened, but the song at the end had something to do with birds eating bugs. Oh, and there was no dialogue in this either. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
-oh, nm. I figured it out. It's Noiseman Sound Insect. Yay.

IMDB - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439533/

Enjoy!

reply

I will check all these out one by one, but before I do: the short animated movie "The External World" seems to be inspired by "Cat Soup". It has the trippyness, the creativity, the mood, the themes, and I think maybe even a character or two. Hope you enjoy!

Oh, and I just found that there's a Cat Soup series. Here's one episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uy8tq4jQ_s&NR=1

thanks for reminding me of this. i've watched Please Say Something from the same director, and it's probably the most original animation i've watched in months, kinda similar to Cat Soup too.

ratings are dumb

reply

I also suggest Angels Egg.

reply

Another person recommending Angel's Egg. It's a full length movie, and is easily G rated, but it's depth and scope are huge.

As a previous poster mentioned, try Noiseman Sound Insect, a bizarre anime short.
