An American Haunting

A film adaptation of Brent Monahan's book about the Bell Witch is in post production. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429573/

Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, Rachel Hurd Wood, James D'Arcy are among the players.

The story alleges a true haunting and documents strange, paranormal events in the lives of the Bell family and their friends and neighbors. But there is something far more sinister and repugnant at work here and when it is revealed, the ghost story becomes fairy tale. Read the book.

Wow. So does that mean that there is really no 'haunting' and that there is a logical explanation for all the weirdness?

I live about 35 miles from where the location of the haunting happened. I've been to the cave where supposedly the witch resides to this day and I've been to the town. The town still lives in fear of the spirit. her legend is still very much alive there. I don't think there is any logical explanition to what happened. When I was walking through the cave, you could feel an eerieness.

Hi Krisse,

I looked up posts on the Bell Witch and I found yours to be very interesting, I wanted to ask you a question I hope you don't mind. In around 1976 and again in 1981 I had two neighbors in Southern Pulaski County Kentucky who wanted me ride down to Tennessee to see this cave and the surrounding land the first time was with an elderly neighbor and I was young, we had a nice visit, It was an early afternoon visit. and even stopped and visited some of the neighbors, not very close neighbors. The second time in 1981 I went with a different newer neighbor, kind of a wild child who just liked having fun, she wanted to go late at night on a weekend and stay over night. Both times the neighbors drove, so I wasn't paying too much attention to how we got there, I lived off of highway 27 and I remember going to 27 and going south through Burnside Kentucky, past the lake, staying on that road all the way into Tennessee. I know where I lived way back then at the time was almost on the Ky. Tenn line. I lived in the Lake cumberland area then, so it wasn't far into McCeery County Ky. and then shortly you were in Tenn.

I just wish I could remember what part of Tennessee we went to to get there. I now live many many states away and am planning a trip to Tennessee pretty soon, where I have family of ancestors in Pall Mall Tennesse just about 8 miles from the Ky/Tenn border. I have a cousin in Erin Tennessee who is going to meet me and take me there to see where our grandmother was raised. What I need to ask you is, if you only live about 35 miles from where we went, what County was this in, If you don't mind.I wasn't very good about keeping records, I still am not great, but at least I have been working on my ancestry records and trying to learn more about my family. It would be great if when I go back to see family if we could visit this county again where this Bell Witch is, I am assuming it's Bell county, but I do not remember what it is connected to, what are the surrounding counties.

I hope you don't mind my bothering you, but would love to go back taking my children. I want them to get into their geneology early in life while they still have a lot of relatives living. I thank you in advance for your help. C

Umm....
I'm kinda new to this whole thing, having just purchased the "American Haunting" book and then looking for info on the Donald Sutherland/Sissy Spacek movie. What's this other one that someone wrote a scathing review about? Are there two movies, one already out and viewable and one coming out? The review said something about largely blaming Kate (the real woman) for the troubles, which obviously the book does at first but then sets straight? Just wanna know the 411.
