Betsy Bell + Joshua Gardener

Am I wrong or does this movie focus more on Betsy's relationship with her first love, Gardener, as opposed to the man she married, the school teacher whose name escapes me at the moment?

From what I know or understand about the "Bell Witch" is that it was some sort of entity that focused on the Bell family. There is no "solid" evidence other than what people witnessed back then. This entity was, from what little I know, not always an angry spirit and that the family could actually speak with "her." I know, from what I have seen and read, that the entity strongly disapproved of the daughter's marriage to one man, and selected another for her, which she married. And, apparently, Betsy Bell, or the daughter that she represented, was a "target" of the so-called Bell Witch, but also seemed to be very protective of her.

"An American Haunting" was not based on truth other than this entity did exist and John Bell's death was the first known death to be blamed on an entity. There is nothing to indicate that John Bell sexually molested his daughter as that movie portrays.

It was well know at the time around that area and stories also say that the entity would "leave" at times and "come back" and would tell the Bell family when she would leave and when she would return. It is a strange story because it claims that she had conversations with other people outside the Bell family. Betsy Bell seemed to be the focus on the entity.

I have not seen the movie and if you would like info, you should google it because there is information on it. Just for the same of trivial pursuit, President Andrew Jackson, before he was president, took his troops and visited the Bell family out of curiosity. Just one of those pieces of useless information, but might come in handy in a game of trivia.

The thing that I find extremely odd is that her school teacher took a romantic interest in her while she was his young student!

For years, she intended to marry Joshua Gardner, and out of all their friends and family, only the Bell Witch and her teacher Richard Powell, disapproved of the marriage.

The witch tormented her so horribly that she finally broke off the engagement with Gardener and married Powell.

She was 15 when she broke off the engagement, meaning that she was already young when her teacher was pursuing her romantically.

She was 18 when she finally married him. He was 29.

How creepy is that?
