Is a Toreno a real car?

Yes! The 1986 Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (Corolla GT-S Twin Cam in the US)
is a real car. Its popular with drifters because it is a good balanced car, and because the "hachiroku" (and its Levin counter part) were the last rear-wheel-drive corolla. The 92 model is front-wheel-drive.

Right, also the fourth generation Corolla (chassis code: AE86) was only made between the years of 1983 and 1986, making it the 'unicorn' of drift racers as it's darn impossible to find a decent one. Trust me. Also, the Levin never saw daylight stateside (which is cool, since pop-up lights are awesome anyway).

I pretty sure that the AE86 was acutally made from 1984 to 1987. In fact, it was an '87 that one D1 GP which was identified as an '87 Hachi Roku. I own an '83 and it's chassis designation is TE71.

The model before that was AE82. Anyone know why they went from AE82 to TE71 then to AE86?

The AE85 is similar to the AE86, but with a different engine, and some other changes. Basically, it's the budget option. Iggy buys one by mistake, thinking he's getting a really cheap AE86, and only finds out later.

Basically it all comes down to the power factor, the AE86 is a DOHC motor (double overhead cam) while the AE85 is left with the less powerful but still usable SOHC (single overhead cam). I'd rather have an AE86 Trueno exactly like in Initial D - with the racing engine from later episodes.

I live in Japan and I see 86s all the time here even in the middle of Tokyo, mostly on Saturdays though.

They're always loaded up with tires stacked in the passenger seat... usually have a rollcage installed too.

The older silvia shown in Initial D is kinda rare... for the most part I only really see the newer Silvias configured to drift. You can usually tell by dings, scrapes and a generally crappy look.

GT-S Skylines are really common as well. They're also the cheapest.

all of the rear drive corollas in the states had the ae86 chassis code on them so lookin at the vin would make it impossible to tell if u had a twin cam or not from that, and we never got the levin because of the headlight regulations here, they were too low, same reason all of our s13s had popup headlights, the jdm s13 front end had the headlights too low to the ground.

Both the 80- and 90-series were launched in Japan a year before export markets, so you're both right. 1983-86 JDM, 1984-87 US/EU/anywhere else they were sold.
To add further confusion, most new car lines launched in the US are "next year's" model when they first came out- this is not done in Europe, at all. (I'm not sure about Japan)
The first Ford Focus was an extreme case; in Europe it was a "1998" launch (debut in Geneva in spring, sales begin early-mid summer) and in the US it was a "2000" launch (debut at Detroit in January 1999; sales begin March 1999). A little over six months became "two years" due to semantics.

Toyota model codes; first letter is the engine (the "T" series engine came before the "A" for some reason); second is the car line, first number is the generation, second is the model.
Thus;
A= A-series engine
E= Corolla series (Corolla, Sprinter, Trueno, Levin, "Chevy" Nova [USDM Sprinter sedan, foreruner to the Prizm] etc...)
8= fifth generation of above
6= 16v coupe or liftback coupe.


AE82 ran concurrently to AE85/86; it was the FWD Corolla 4-door sedan; TE71 was the previous generation (2-door sedan?) I hadn't heard of a 1983 TE7x before, I'd only heard of 1980-82s and 1983 AE7x (old body, new engine).
