I came across this show by accident while browsing Dieter Meier and see he did an episode with Bryan Ferry. Because there's no description for this show, I can't imagine what it is, and how these two would end up on the same episode. Would someone be kind enough to describe what type of show this is? Is it a talk show? Are English speakers subtitled, or are just ones who speak German selected? Are odd selections made, or do they come on serially, one after the other, so there's no interaction? (I'm trying to figure out how this odd but interesting pairing was selected!) And finally, does anyone know whether there are plans for this series to come to DVD? I'd soooo love to be able to see two of my favorites! Thanks for any info!
The programme works like this: Two celebrities/artists are paired up and then basically send on a tour through a city for one night (hence the title, which translated as "Through the night with..."). Usually the two haven't met before (I do think they have a say in who they're paired up with though), so some get along great and some stay very distant the whole night. They have a driver for the night and they go to different locations, usually a restaurant/bar, a museum/exhibition or similar. Sometimes they also do sports or go to a karaoke bar. Of course, the camera follows them the whole time. ;) Usually, (at least) one of them either lives in the city or has a strong connection to it (they've been to lots of different cities already: Berlin, Paris, Hamburg, Toronto, London, Los Angeles, New York, Istanbul, just to name a few). Quite often they also meet up with friends/acquaintances of one of the two. E.g. Marilyn Manson appeared on the episode that had Heike Makatsch meet Peaches in Berlin. To get an impression of what it's like, here's an excerpt from the episode featuring Adam Green and Carl Barat (then of The Libertines, now of Dirty Pretty Things): http://youtube.com/watch?v=jpoV9-lyUdE and one from the episode featuring Franka Potente and John Carpenter: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9Y5me8md5Io
The show is made for German/French channel Arte and shown with subtitles (if necessary).
There used to be DVDs, but I'm not sure if they're still available.
Thank you for your *excellent* description of what sounds like a TREMENDOUSLY fun show! I'd been expecting your average talk show, with two people on a stage with a host, of course, but this sounds *ever* so much more fun, like friends getting together in one's home city while one shows the other around. I appreciate it that you took the time to help me understand and picture it all. Now I can't wait even *more* to see the Dieter Meier/Bryan Ferry episode! I hope I'll get the chance someday.
I did a little research: the DVD is still available. You can get the episode for €6,99 or the complete series (or rather 'first season'? it's 8 DVDs anyway) for €39,99 from Zweitausendeins (2001).
They do ship abroad, but I'm not sure what they charge for that. The easiest way to find out would probably be to contact them either via email or phone:
Oh, my goodness, meininki! You're SUCH a sweetie! I even recognize Dieter and Bryan on the cover of the box! Wow; I'm soooo excited! Danke ever soooo much! I owe you a favor! Save my URL below, and come visit me it any time to collect, okay? I'm good for it!
