He's a serial killer and doesn't necessarily have a motive! He just sees that these people are evil in his eyes, and is a sociopath who feels they should be killed.
I read the book and it was great, but a lot can get lost from pages to screen because you don't get the exposition. To me, the serial killer isn't really the point of the movie. However, it's the impetus to research into the Ernst's killing specifically since Elroy says he didn't do that one.
I started watching this in the morning and recorded it. Annabeth Gish didn't strike me as being Cynthia Ernst because she was supposed to be the ICE QUEEN and gorgeous, not just pretty (in my opinion).
