Syphilis is not a virus...

Treponema pallidum is not a virus but a spirochete, a bacterium.
Pity they don't comment on HIV, Hepatitis B and similar viruses
which are incurable and ultimately deadly.
The shot the teens received in the film was penicillin and it's
not a vaccine. Why do these pseudo-educational films have to be so
incorrect?

They're fictional. And they're meant to stir conversation and debate, so those people who should be concerned get more, accurate 411.

I think they pin pointed syphilis because (since i just had sex ed.) it is becoming one of the fastest growing STD among teens.

No power in the 'Verse can stop me!

syphillis is still deadly if not caught and treated early. it basically eats your brain and makes you go mad before you die.

reply

Yes, I noticed that too and it really bugs me. People are already so ignorant of science and now there's a fairly popular movie promoting the idea that antibiotics can cure viruses?!?

reply

or how about herpes which is a virus and has no cure. A herpes outbreak would have been more realistic.

This film really angered me with its total lack of truth about syphilis. The least they could have done before production was 'googled it' for God's sake.

Plus, with HIPPA rules the school never would have been able to openly line the kids up for testing without getting their pants sued off.

reply

Yeah that really annoyed me. Something like that is obvious. I'm glad to see it's in the goofs section. Seriously though how hard would it be. They got the treatment right - it is usually intramuscular, whereas for antibiotics most people would be thinking oral - how did they fail to get the actual diagnosis?!

They commented on herpes but that was the only really incurable virus they mentioned. I suppose the other ones are less of a risk in high school.
