when dawn is in the nurses office asking about the std, the nurse asks her to tell how many boys she has had sex with. she tells dawn not to worry for she will, "not judge" dawn on her answer. so dawn thinks and comes up with like 20+ guys and is now sobbing away. the nurse, in turn, looks shocked and scared for dawn but responds with, "you've had sex with 20 plus guys?!?!!" so much for not judging dawn. she totally is. poor dawn. what a nurse!

This may not be quite as true in the current time, but I think you'll find STDs aren't very common in small town america. I know that the town I grew up in the attitude was that "STDs are a city thing", and while that sounds naive, it was true. No one I knew had an STD, it seemed so foreign. I had unprotected sexual relations with hundreds of people and never caught an STD. Also, not having an unplanned pregnancy is simply a matter of being responsible in that respect. I think you'll find most unplanned teen pregnancies are very planned. Now that I've moved to the city, I wouldn't dream of having unprotected sex, STDs have become very, very real. I guess STDs haven't managed to infiltrate every nook and cranny of america yet.

shareI don't think it only has to do with the parents now-a-days, though. Yes, obviously parents are a big part of it.
But, in the movie, Becca (I believe) had very religious parents who were always at church or always trying to have their kids be avid church-goers...
Where as the other one... I don't remember her name (not Hannah but the other blonde) had a very slutty mother and she was a lot less promiscuous then her friend. And she was definitely right on when she said she knew she wouldn't be punished cause that would mean her mom would have to stay home and away from her almost destructive lifestyle.

shareI watched this movie on Lifetime the other day. I'd seen it a couple times before, as well, but I noticed the same thing this time. I agree with the OP, because of the way the lady kept OVER and OVER again stressing "I am NOT here to judge, Dawn." Then, she says "You've had sex with 20 boys?"
I mean, I understand the shock of a 14 yr old girl doing that, but she couldn't have just been like, "OK, well there's that..." to herself, at least to make herself sound a little less judgemental?
The universe may not always play fair, but at least it's got a hell of a sense of humor.
I really liked that aspect of the movie. They did a great job of portraying the message that these events can happen to anyone, no matter their ubringing or social status. It really came across in the varied parenting styles of the girls' parents as well as during the council meeting.
shareAll about perspective here. Let's say the character attends two summer parties and at each one she gets gangbanged by ten guys. In just the span of those two parties she would have had sex with 20 guys. It could easily happen.
shareI guess it depends on how you look at it. Let's say that 20 year old lost her virginity at 13, so she's been having sex for 7 years. Twenty partners over that time would only be about three partners a year, not a lot, really. Plus, in the movie the character didn't have sex with 20 guys, she'd had sexual relations with them...she may have only slept with a handful of guys.

We counted it up one day. & about 13 were just from a year ago, until now. Surprisingly, she's never gotten an std, and most times were unprotected. & even though she's my cousin, I'll straight out say that I think she's a slut.
