The reason why this great film was boycotted by the Islamic Regime is that it strongly criticizes the religious but not moral society of Iran. The situation that has brought about after the Islamic Revolution. In some scenes the director indirectly points out to the fact that the calamities of Ali (and other young addicts)is caused by the previous generation, the one who abolished the rather socially open and progressing (but not absolutely independent) regime of Pahlavi.

The movie portrays social disaster that is occuring in the Iranian Youth: Desperateness, Addiction, Decay and finally immigration for those who can!

Mehrjui artistically indicates how extremism can destroy talents, through depicting Ali's relation with his parents. In my country, Iran, in spite of intensive tendency to music among juveniles , Islamic rules defy music and reluctantly permits musicians to work and some traditional families who are afraid whether music is a battle with god(!!) get along with these superstitions.
