question about scene with jonathan and mother

Somewhere in the middle of the movie there is a scene in which Jonathan is lying in bed and his mother is sitting next to him. He then looks over to the side, gets up and closes a door. What is that about???? I just can't figure it out. I was wondering if maybe his father was in that room doing something.. I have absolutely no idea!

Okay, so I have just watched this excellent film again and I'll answer this question if I can.

We see Andrew as a child, not Jonathon, lying on the bed being comforted by his mother. We see it from Paul's POV through the half open door. When Andrew gets up and closes the door it is symbolic of shutting Paul out of the loop. Paul mentions it later in the film when he says there was a "happy fúcking little threesome, Andy, mom, and god". And that he "couldn't get in", and that Andrew "made sure of that". He also accused Andrew of marrying his mom, because he chose Penny who bore a striking resemblance to his mother, and was also strongly religious, and a bit touched in the head.

Much later, as the film is closing we see Jonathon lying on the bed having called the police and turned his father in, getting comforted by his mom. Only this time Paul walks away from choice, and is not shut out.

It is such a pity the Director died only three years after making this film ... Brad McGann (1964–2007).

Ok, thank you!
I totally did not get that!
Such a great movie - not a single scene without some kind of meaning or hint to the story.

You're welcome :)

It is a beautiful film, I love the unhurried pace, the realistic emotions, and that scene where Paul just breaks down in the hallway after finding out what happened to Celia. Because he has built a wall to protect himself he was able to keep most of it hidden, but when he gets back home and is alone he lets it all out. No overplaying, no histrionics, just ... pain. Brilliant.
