I think a lot of people are ignoring a massive plot hole.

If the HOFD had someone spy on Mei and the mole in order to make sure nothing goes wrong, then why wouldn't they send someone to spy on Mei's killing (or lack thereof) of Jin - especially seeing as they know she has feelings for him.

Either the HOFD made a big and uncharacteristic mistake or there is a reasonably large plot hole here.

There is no "large plot hole". If you had paid attention to the scene when Jin saw that Mei wasn't blind, they mentioned that Mei has done this type of thing before. So HOFD would be comfortable in sending Mei alone to kill Jin.

There are two reasons why they would have sent someone after Mei to spy on the killing;

- They sent someone after her when she went off with the mole
- They know Mei has feelings for Jin. She may have killed people before but I highly doubt she has killed people she has had feelings for, and even if she had done they would have still sent someone just to be sure.

I think you have missed a bit of the plot. The whole point of the plot is to get the General involved so that that they can lure the army into an ambush and do as much damage as possible.

But this whole plot is just backstory and actually not important as the story that is focused on in this movie is the emotional threesome between the main characters.

I agree the plot with the holes in it is only needed to maintain your interest while they build up the prefered plot. I disagree with your plot hole although I think there are some with Leo. Why orchestrate this whole thing when he could just say hey boss I know where they are to draw the general in? People seem to overlook some of the themes about commitment to a cause or group and how it does not leave room for love. The house has already separated her from leo, maybe now they realize they are all lost in love and decide to let them destroy eachother.

Late, late reply to this, I know, but:

If he did that, the General would wonder how he has this information, and suspect a possible trap.

I think his cover was that he was recruited as a normal soldier from the general population, and had no indirect knowledge of, let alone background with, the HOFD. (If he played instead a turncoat from the HOFD, which would probably be one of the few plausible ways he'd know where they were based from the getgo, the General would wisely be skeptical of his true intentions and loyalties, and would at least suspect a trap.) So, he had to pretend to actually do some work to "find out" where they were. He had to draw up what seemed like a cunning plot to trail this woman, to make it look genuine.

What about Captain Leo? The Leader of HOFD sends him off to a spy mission after his botched encounter with Mei - perhaps to overlook this very execution? Now the reasons for the Leader to sending HIM are a bit harder to explain - perhaps she figured that the romantic entaglements between the three were compromising the safety of the rebel movement, and hence it would be better if they just settled it in a bloody fashion, once and for all. :)

Watch it with the Yimou/Ziyi commentary. It is overall a really weak story, but the commentary at least provides information about what was intended.

I'm increasingly of the view that Yimou doesn't bother himself a whole lot about story and character; that about all that matters to him is the visual.

Who says they didn't? It appeared to me they sent the jilted lover, Leo, to spy on them. Leo wanted Jin dead more than anyone. Zero danger of Leo getting a soft heart & letting them both ride off into the sunset too. HoFD also probably believed Mei & Leo were both very loyal given they both were willing to die for the HoFD & given their past tasks. Mei even stated she "knew" Leo would kill her for going with/after Jin, which implied she thought/knew she was being spied on. Even if Leo didn't spy on them then maybe a spy we never see tells Leo. Jin needed to be dead if Leo was going to continue as an undercover spy.

After freeing Jin, Mei probably suspected Leo (the spy) would protect her with a fake excuse to HoFD & do anything for her so she felt safe freeing Jin.

Mei didn't immediately ride off with Jin, so Leo was probably hoping she was having a change of heart, she had her fling in the grass with Jin & maybe it was over now (maybe Leo was hoping Jin would be bad in bed too?). Leo would be the one waiting for her & there to pick up the pieces. When she went after Jin then Leo knew he had definitely lost her.

Mei was no match in fighting/assassination skills compared to Leo, which is why he is able to take her out so quick. If Leo had attempted to fight/kill Jin 1st then Mei could have arrived later & tipped the scales in favor of Jin as their battle lasted much longer.

Jin was probably right that Mei found it very hard to leave Leo & she felt loyal to him for saving her life many times in the past (& maybe promised him a future with her later while he waited for 3years? Leo seemed to really stress those 3years). After she sees Jin ride off & she thinks & ultimately decides how she wants to be free of being "a pawn" for HoFD & free from "forced" Leo despite her feeling like she owes Leo. She rides off taking a gamble that she might survive/escape when Leo attacks.
