If the HOFD had someone spy on Mei and the mole in order to make sure nothing goes wrong, then why wouldn't they send someone to spy on Mei's killing (or lack thereof) of Jin - especially seeing as they know she has feelings for him.
Either the HOFD made a big and uncharacteristic mistake or there is a reasonably large plot hole here.
There is no "large plot hole". If you had paid attention to the scene when Jin saw that Mei wasn't blind, they mentioned that Mei has done this type of thing before. So HOFD would be comfortable in sending Mei alone to kill Jin.

- They sent someone after her when she went off with the mole
- They know Mei has feelings for Jin. She may have killed people before but I highly doubt she has killed people she has had feelings for, and even if she had done they would have still sent someone just to be sure.
I think you have missed a bit of the plot. The whole point of the plot is to get the General involved so that that they can lure the army into an ambush and do as much damage as possible.
But this whole plot is just backstory and actually not important as the story that is focused on in this movie is the emotional threesome between the main characters.

I agree the plot with the holes in it is only needed to maintain your interest while they build up the prefered plot. I disagree with your plot hole although I think there are some with Leo. Why orchestrate this whole thing when he could just say hey boss I know where they are to draw the general in? People seem to overlook some of the themes about commitment to a cause or group and how it does not leave room for love. The house has already separated her from leo, maybe now they realize they are all lost in love and decide to let them destroy eachother.

What about Captain Leo? The Leader of HOFD sends him off to a spy mission after his botched encounter with Mei - perhaps to overlook this very execution? Now the reasons for the Leader to sending HIM are a bit harder to explain - perhaps she figured that the romantic entaglements between the three were compromising the safety of the rebel movement, and hence it would be better if they just settled it in a bloody fashion, once and for all. :)
shareWatch it with the Yimou/Ziyi commentary. It is overall a really weak story, but the commentary at least provides information about what was intended.
I'm increasingly of the view that Yimou doesn't bother himself a whole lot about story and character; that about all that matters to him is the visual.
