Did anyone actually like this better than Hero?

I'm in the minority I actually liked this movie better than Hero...maybe it was the romantic aspect etc. I don't know. I really liked the climatic snow fight scene to.

So did I, but I really dont think we are the minority here. House of Flying Daggers received better reviews

reply

No, hero received better reviews

As far as I remember, Hero was just a generic martial arts flick. There was nothing special about it.

I gave both Crouching Tigger Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers a 10/10.
I gave a 7/10 to Hero.

Hero WASN'T just a generic martial arts flick. It was more than a flick. There were so many special stuff, i wonder how you could miss all of that. As to style, I put both HOFD and Hero at the same level, 10/10. But when it comes to substance/plot Hero is up there with 10/10 and HOFD would get my 8/10 (final 9/10, which I gave here). There are serious questions to the plot of the HOFD.

And there aren't problems with Hero's plot?

If you think there ARE, just name some of them. We'll see what we can do with them. :)

Hero was a generic martial arts movie? What? Granted I haven't seen it since it was in the theaters, but I remember telling my friend that Hero was an art film disguised as a martial arts movie. Beautiful and stunning but flawed movie. HOFD is a better action movie but the plot and the final product didn't evoke as much in me as Hero.

Then again, Zhang Yimou has been "losing the plot" with each successive movie he's made since his heady days of the 80's and early 90's. Curse of the Lotus Flower was almost a parody even if Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li were eminently watchable.

reply

Me too,but I am the only person I know that liked it better than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

reply

I agree with you. For me HOFD has more heart which is probably the romantic aspect of the story but I also much preferred the characters and the way it was filmed. I've sold my copy of CTHD now as I don't ever feel like watching it. I have yet to watch Hero!

reply

You have to watch Hero,it is a beautiful movie if nothing else, and who know's you might find it better than the previously mentioned movies?I've argued long and hard about the virtues of all three, and nobody who likes one, dislikes the others, they just tend to like one more. And in fairness,Hero is a bit different from the other two in basic story structure, whilst amping up the colour scheme setting I fell in love with in Daggers(so in a way, despite the fact I still love Daggers the best,i can understand why people might think it the weakest). Why not reply back here after watching and say what you think?

reply

I own Crouching Tiger, Hero, and House of Flying Daggers, and I always find myself rewatching HOFD more. All are simply beautiful, but I think HOFD had a much better ending than the other two.

"Fuggedabout Joe the Plumber, what about Don the Jeweler?".

reply

Hell. Yeah.

House of Flying Daggers is an absolute masterpiece. Hero is a good movie in its own right, but in my opinion I think it's the inferior film here.

reply

House of Flying Daggers was pretty and everything, but had a terrible plot. Hero was pretty and had that marvelous narrative framework. Hero is one of my favorite movies of the decade.

reply

Yes. I saw this before Hero, expected the latter to be better, but didn't like it anything as much. Perhaps because I'm female?

reply

I love both films, but HoFD is my favourite of the two.

"Sir, let those laugh that win."

reply

I did. I love this movie so much!
