Who eats salad while driving??

OK, this part of the film was preposterous to me. Are we supposed to assume she was driving with kids in the car AND eating a leafy salad at the same time? This seems impossible to me. Otherwise a suspenseful and brilliant film!

"Harold . . . That was your last date!"

Because she probably didn't eat the salad, that leaves open the possibility that she actually did commit suicide and drove into the wall on purpose. Both seem a bit far fetched, but at least they are both possible.

I think the salad had nothing to do with the deaths. I don't think she ate it.

If you look carefully at Elaine when she is getting the kids into the car, she has a really fake smile and her face is getting creepy. You can guess that she's up to something, she doesn't look normal like someone who is just in a rush, she looks a little psycho, she has a plan, and agree with slanzet that she drove into the wall on purpose.

The salad was a red herring. Didn't get eaten. Just shows how far Sarsgard's character would go.

I agree that it is unlikely that someone would eat a salad while driving, but I have to state that I have done it on numerous occasions (just because I eat alot of salad and was usually crunched for time on Monday evenings). It does take skill, however.

Yes, it's a really, really iffy plot point. But it IS Los Angeles, where people spend half their lives stuck in traffic and as a result often try to multi-task while driving. You could as well ask "Who puts on their makeup while driving?," but who in L.A. hasn't seen somebody doing just that?
