The crying during intimacy thing?

I really liked this movie but have an unresolved issue after viewing it.
When Robert climaxes from Jeffery's "manual manipulation" why does he start crying like a schoolgirl? I am curious if I missed something and this was a significant scene? I just didn't get it.

I think he missed Malcohm so much, so he cried out.

-Oh My God, he's wearing Prada shoes. He's gay! This is great!

reply

OK, I thought it had something to do with Malcolm (like Robert felt guilty about being with another guy or maybe like he was cheating on Malcolm because he still loved him so much and he wasn't over his death yet).

I love all movies and don't mind seeing gay characters do their thing on film, although I'm 25 and couldn't ever get one of my buddies to watch a movie with this much gay stuff, but anyway back to my point, that part really disturbed me. I just it was very scary. I understood why he did it - because it missed Malcolm so much, but like it said, it just seemed really disturbing. Great acting by Saarsgard though.

Wow! They've got the Internet on computers now! - Homer Simpson

Meh, the crying was very hammed. I couldn't help but laugh my ass off. Had it not sounded like a 40 year old woman, it would have been touching.

The crying was really creepy and awkward. I mean I understand why he cried, but it made me feel really weird...

this was a very good depiction of the way men cry, who are unused to expressing their emotions with other people
yes, it's awkward, yes, it's creepy, yes, it's disturbing to watch- exactly as it is in a real life
Scarsgaard gives one hell of a performance there

I agree with this assessment - just watched the movie last night. He was all pent up with emotion, hadn't fully grieved Malcom's death, hadn't had sex? Thought it was one of the actor's best moments and there were plenty.

reply

Exactly right. Yes, it was disturbing -- but very, very real. An amazing bit of acting...apparently wasted on the "he cried like a schoolgirl" crowd.

reply

It is jarring, because that's something you just don't see male actors do in movies. But I think Skarsgaard was trying to convey a moment when Robert lets his guard down, and even though it seems a pretty inappropriate moment, all the repressed grief he's been feeling comes pouring out. I really like that moment, but admittedly it's a pretty out-there choice by the actor.

The crying could very well have been his reaction to a really great orgasm. Some people scream, some laugh, some cry.

reply

I think that's the ambiguity of the scene. It is meant to leave you guessing at why he is doing what he's doing. The subtext is definitely there and it's up to us to come up with our own conclusions as to why he's crying-- depending on what perpective the viewer brings to the movie.

I have to add my two cents. I just watched the movie last night and really enjoyed it. The post-orgasm crying scene was indeed creepy and uncomfortable to watch because it felt so authentic. It was one of the most affecting scenes I've seen in a while, Sarsgaard did an incredible job! I had problems with the poisonous root angle, I found that unnecessary.

The crying scene to me represented the character's sterotypical and wispy mannerisms as portrayed by the usually magnigicent Peter Saarsgard. Yes, it is natural for a person to experience immense grief and sadness when jumping into an intimate experience with someone else after the loss of a partner but the way it was expressed by the character seemed too contrived. Also, Campbell Scott seemed to be going through the motions during the ending scene when he learns of the accident involving his wife and kids.

Also, I really don't feel that a straight woman could have conjured up some of the things that Elaine typed in the chat room. The movie overall could have been so much more.

oh pleese, there was barely any gay stuff in the film. they didn't even show them kissing.

reply

Actually they kiss in a deleted scene on the DVD extras.
