Excellent!

I don't know why most of you say this movie is boring or slow or bad acted. It is excellent! It is very funny at some parts and it has great performances from Salma and Idina above all. It is full of spirit and logical things. The script is a very good one. Everything they said made sense and was very intelligent. I personally enjoyed very much the discussion scenes between Colin and Salma. They were great! This picture deserved much more support and more objective comments!

See, I totally agree. Some of the writing in this just blew me away, especially a few of the quotable things, they were genius. Colin and Selma were awesome. The acting they did with their eyes was wonderful. It was a little slow at some parts, but everything really tied up nicely at the end. God, poetic justice at it's finest. I mean, am I right? They couldn't end it better with the two, finally finding each other, speaking of the future and possabilities, the love he finally found, the love she had always and only wanted... on her deathbed. Nothing dramatic, just realistic. After so much time running away, he finally comes back and shes gone... I just thought it was great al fields.

"on her deathbed" ?!!! You actually said that?!! YOU JUST BLEW IT FOR ME!

This movie was terrific and I still can't believe how little play it got considering the two main actors. While I've always enjoyed Salma in anything she did, I was surprised at how good Colin was. The interplay with Idina was a beautiful, thoughtful touch.

reply

AGAIN! I can't believe you said "...on her deathbed"!!

You just spoilt the ending of the film!!! Use the spoiler tag

reply

Oh rubbish mr. innocentnaiveboy!

No such rule...perhaps a courtesy.

Watch the film BEFORE you IMDb it and stop blaming others for spoilers.

Thank you kreemer!

Simple common sense if you do not want a movie from 2006 (no less) spoiled then do not go digging on an IMDB board.

It is known.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

just couldn't get through it. Colin Farrell ruined what I thought would be an interesting film. Salma was good. Just real bad though, sorry.

reply

I wasn't plesantly surprised by this film, theres not much to fault, the chemistry between Hayak and Farrell was enjoyable and for me really made the film great.

reply

i don't see how it could be excellent at all, the characters were disgusting mean and unrealistic, and frankly nothing about the story really was interesting enough to justify its production. i'm surprised anyone thought it was a good idea to make this stupid film. a total waste of time.

reply

Is not a realistic piece of cinema...is an old, little bit unrealistic (as u would imagine by reading a book) world, very well put together. Collin gave a good performance and fet very well into the play
I also dont understand how come it has such a low score

reply

I enjoyed this movie too, although I'm not sure if I'd call it excellent. I thought it was well acted and beautifully filmed. Some of the imagery stayed with me days after I'd seen the film, so in the end I bought it on dvd and read the book. The book is even better than the film btw.

discussion scenes between Colin and Salma.

Yes very adult drama. Esp good if you appreciate a bit of period work
that isn't too heavy on that. Yet captures the best of a sensual
relationship. Both leads got fully into the game. Tasty looks and
feelings. This is the soul of an artistic struggle.
Be nice tho if the rewards were as great as SH.
Glad they made this refreshingly literate piece. And that some others
see the beauty in it.

I'm going to have to say that I was incredibly disappointed in the film. The novel is one of my favorites of all time and I felt like the film-makers completely missed the theme/feel of it. There were also major changes to the story that crippled it and Bandini wasn't fleshed out nearly enough as a character. I agree with all the people who say that Colin Farrell is grossly miscast in this. Just terribly disappointing to someone who's a huge fan of the book...

reply

Yes, some room for criticism if you adored the book. Bandini is supposed to be 20 years old, so is Camilla. At least Towne cleaned up the marijuana weed from hell pothead addiction hysteria. It wouldn't play well today. One more thing, this Mexican epithet. Didn't she say in the book she was American? Born on this side of the border? I didn't take it as an immigration tale at all, although Bandini acknowledges that both their families came more recently to these shores.

I miss Big Band music and talented singers. Leonard Cohen/idol. Civility, harmony, unity!

reply

OK, you book lovers -- I just rec'd The Big Hunger by John Fante and his collection of short stories includes a NEW first chapter for Ask the Dust. In this chapter, he reveals that in 'real life' his Camilla Lopez is chased away by the tubercular Sammy out in the desert, and she leaves by her own old car, which is found later abandoned and stripped along the side of the road. Maybe she got a ride with someone, or maybe she died, and in truth, HE DOESN'T KNOW -- maybe she made it to Mexico or maybe.....

reply

Yes, finding someone's car stripped and abandoned on the side of the road in the middle of the desert is usually the first indication that everything has ended well. (note sarcasm here)

reply

For me the movie was just another awkward adaptation of a good book. Per the usual of most adaptations, they sold out some harsh realities for an attempt at keeping masses entertained. With material like Ask the Dust you either do it all the way, and right, or you don't do it at all. For the folks who enjoy the poetic writing of the film, you're actually giving props to the book, which is, of course, where they came from. Colin Farrell is not a good actor AND he was miscast on top of that. Same for Salma Hayek, though I can deal with her a bit better than I can with Farrell. Even if they were good enough actors, their beauty should've been toned down. The only reason the film got made was because Colin Farrell wanted to do it. I did like the recreation of Bunker Hill in the 1930's, though.

reply

I agree, it is just excellet.

1) Full of spirit
2) Excellent acting of Salma and Colin
3) Excellent story

reply
